It is with great sadness that we report the death of John Egbert. John apparently succumbed on August 23, when he was found in his Cincinnati home. A colleague in his law firm became concerned when he did not report for work, and requested that his absence be investigated. We have sent the class condolences to his widow,
We all know about the wonts of historian Zeke Hill, but did you hear that he recently published a novel entitled, "The Voyages of Brian Seaworthy?" It is an historical adventure set on Lake Champlain a century ago when steamboating was the "in" thing on that gracious body of water. This is right down Zeke's alley of course, because he is a leading authority on sidewheel steamers, and was instrumental in the saving of the last Lake vessel, the Ticonderoga, which now sits high and dry, though proud at the Shelburne Museum, just south of Burlington, Vt. We have been patiently waiting for an autographed complimentary `copy which should be along any day now.
George Neiley, who is the director of public relations at Deere & Company, has recently been elected president of the John Deere Foundation. George has served as VP of the foundation for a number of years before stepping into the principal spot. Incidentally, we may be seeing some of midwesterner Neiley one of these days, because son Tim is back at Hanover as a senior after an interlude in the Coast Guard. The younger Neiley spent the summer on the Hanover plain, working as an assistant to photographer Adrian Bouchard. Here is a fine "example of "like-father-like-son."
Jack Goldman, New York Life Insurance Company agent affiliated with the Northern Illinois general office, has been elected a director of the North Shore branch of the Chicago Association of Life Underwriters. lack has been a member of the association since 1967 and is active in Evanston's Rotary and the University Club. He has won the insurance industry's National Quality Award for the past three years, and is a member of New York Life's Top Club. He and wife Lorraine, who have two sons and two daughters, live at 536 Woodlawn, Glencoe, Ill.
We were the recipient of an article in Management Magazine with a six month report on Norton Company by Bob Bushman. Bob took over the top executive reins at the Worcester abrasive giant, as reported in this column last spring, and has been hard at work setting up a new executive structure ever since. Apparently he has things humming, and this could be an indicator that we'll see him at some of our class functions in the. near future.
We would like to have a meaningful report on the deliberations of College re: th move to accommodate young ladies on the Hanover Plain, but imagine this can st be covered by more knowledgeable sources than this reporter's. Yet, we have carefully noted the demeanor of our President, Bert MacMannis, as he served on the committee developed by the Class Officers Association to study the problem. We would have to say that he has swung from the "iffy" stage to a strong negative, but he reports that his persuasion is apparently out of step with the majority.
We ran into Lou Oldershaw early in October, and it was right in our own back yard. Ginny and Lou were visiting friends in Pittsfield, and the beef at a function which we attended revolved around Lou's picking up the prize money on the golf course with a sparkling 76. It is entirely possible that we disrupted his magic, because as a Dartmouth entry in a ping pong contest we were destroyed by an unseeded pair from Princeton. We didn't think it was the Tigers' year?
