I have just noticed that the proof that I received from Hanover on last month's column moved Lou Young, our Class Treasurer, from Devon to "Hevou," Pa. In the off chance that it got printed that way in the January issue, please take note that Lou has not moved, and is still receiving class dues at the same old address—as printed at the top of this column!
As this is being written, the local radio stations are announcing that Jake Crouthamel has been selected to replace Bob Blackman as coach of the Big Green. A surprise—yes; but, having played under Blackman—and coached with him, Jake certainly should have the qualifications to carry on Bob's winning ways!
1971 bids fair to be a banner year! Your Secretary has already had a letter! It comes from classmate and fraternity brother Fritz Cluthe, from a new (to me) address: 20 Quaker Road, Short Hills, N. J. 07078. It reads in part as follows:
"I have just recently completed my 126 th flight over the Atlantic, and on this flight brought my bride with me. After a quiet divorce this summer, I married Ela (Eleanore) Ahl of Essen, Germany, on November 28. My older daughter, Leigh, her husband and 7-month-old daughter were at the wedding and flew back with us.
"As you may recall, I'm president of Strohmeyer & Arpe Co., an old importing company specializing in canned fish, olives, olive oil, and also commercial waxes. These activities keep me flying all over the world quite a bit of the year, but I enjoy it. Ela and I enjoy skiing and plan to visit the Hanover area soon."
A late fall item in the Wall Street Journal brought a bit of news concerning DonSamuel. Ralph E. Samuel & Co., of which Don was a principal partner, was merged into Neuberger & Berman on December 1, and Don has become a partner in the merged firm. Both companies were members of the New York Stock Exchange. The merged firm is forming a new affiliate, Cedar Street Consultants, Inc., a mutual fund management company which will handle the Energy Fund and the Guardian Mutual Fund, which were handled by the separate firms prior to their merger.
From Hanover comes a request to plug the First Annual Dartmouth Alumni Ski Weekend, taking place in Hanover on March 6 and 7, 1971. The organizers of the event are offering a complete package for lodging at the Hanover Inn on Friday and Saturday nights, dinner Friday and Saturday nights and two days of skiing at the Skiway. The all-inclusive price is $80 per couple, with proportionate reductions for singles and for those requiring only one night of lodging. It is hoped that some races will be organized, and that there will be an evening program on Saturday night. For further information, or for individual or group reservations, write or call Dennis A. Dinan, 203 Crosby Hall, Hanover, New Hampshire 03755.
A letter from treasurer Lou Young was received just too late to be included in last month's column, but the important part of it follows:
"Our third dues bill goes out to those who haven't paid in January. We will send a personal note with this bill. In your next column mention that as of December 2 we have paid up dues from 271 classmates out of 530! I would like the best class ever to graduate from Dartmouth to win one competition, and there is no place like here to start—i.e. the 1970-71 dues competition!
"Like all of us, the children are no longer kids. My daughter, Sandra, graduated from West Chester College and is teaching elementary school in our area. Son Lou III graduated from Dartmouth last June and is working for Bell Telephone Co. of Pennsylvania (and Bill Cashel Sec.) and expecting to get married in February. Son Jeff is a sophomore at University of Delaware and had to give up football because of concussions. Youngest son Mike is captain-elect of Connestoga High School football team for next year. Wife Barbara and I are playing squash and golf and having a ball.
"Any one coming to the Philadelphia area, please give us a call. We're in the Philadelphia suburban phone book. We see a lot of the Hugh Kenworthys and the BillCashels."
Lou also sent with his letter a number of notes he had received from the 271 of you who have paid your dues. I'll start using these next month, unless some of you give me more current news to work on. Why not keep me posted so we won't be strangers when we get together for our delayed 30th Reunion in June of 1972? It only takes a few minutes and a six cent stamp!
