Other than some touches of frostbite, we here in the east have survived some record cold weather and are now looking forward to some nice warm spring skiing.
I wrote a while back about Tony Gittes' purchase of the Ecuadorian operations of W.R. Grace & Co. Thanks to some communication from Tony's wife Carol I've got a little more information on that. Tony acquired Grace y Cia. S.A., which owns Grace's one third interests in Cartonera Ecuatoriana S.A., operator of a box plant, and Papelera Nacional, S.A., owner of a paper mill. Grace y Cia. will be operated under its present name until 1972 and will continue to be the local agent in Ecuador for Prudential-Grace Lines, Johnson Line and Gulf and South American Steamship Co., Inc. It will also supervise the ammonia terminal operations at Guayaquil on behalf of Grace, which owns the terminal company. Carol writes that, "besides Tony's activities in business he still manages to be president of the American Society, a director of the American School, director of the Centro de Ejecutivos (the Equadorian executives' center), cultural director of the Rotary Club, and president of the Centro Ecuatoriana-Norteamericano (the Ecuadorian- North American Cultural Center). It might also interest you to know that another '58, Mark Gillmore, is the new president-elect of the American Society. He is here in Ecuador managing the First National City Bank. We have four children now and are all enjoying South America very much. We would love to have some of our Dartmouth friends come visit us." With all the cold and snow we have had up here, Carol, you [nay have some takers. Thanks for the letter.
A card from Jim Fannin tells me that he has left Philadelphia to take the job of assistant administrator of Emerson Hospital in Concord, Mass. "We are a 210-bed community hospital as opposed to my previous teaching employer. The family is getting used to the grass and trees again alter the inner-city existence of the past four years."
The Rev. Pete Kelsey writes, "Greetings from quiet, peaceful, and never a dull moment Berkeley. Am in a small parish three miles north of Telegraph Avenue, Most people in this particular section wish that it did not exist. Taxes and Gov. Reagan are the other topics of conversation around here. We have just returned (this card was written a while back, Secretary) from a vacation at our place near the Dartmouth Skiway in Lyme Center. Hope some year to be able to spend a winter in it, but are now renting for the academic year. Haven't seen too many classmates as the Dartmouth Club here meets on Wednesday noon, a time that I can't attend. Bob Fosse came through last July with his wife, Peggy. He and his three children are thriving in Flagstaff, Ariz., where he is the rector of the Episcopal Parish. Not much else here."
Dan Palant has just moved to Belmont, Mass. "As you know, Barb, our 16-month- old son Billy and I are now living in Belmont. Billy was born in Athens, Greece 4/24/69 while I served a tour with the Air Force as pediatrician at the A.F. Hospital just outside Athens. We loved it and eventually extended there and served a total of four years. We returned to Boston where I completed a fellowship in Birth Defect Evaluation and Genetic Counselling at the Tufts-New England Medical Center and I am now on the staff and an instructor in Pediatrics at the Boston Floating Hospital. The Floating is the pediatric unit of Tufts."
Jack Devanny is on the move in the medical world too. "Finished orthopedic residency at the University of Pittsburgh hospitals in 1969. Private practice in Miami for 18 months. Miami is a good place to visit, but as a place to live—it's 'colder' than Mt. Washington in January. Recently accepted a position as assistant prof, of Orthopedic Surgery at the University of Rochester School of Medicine. It's great to be back north again. Married; four kids, Timothy, Scott, Colleen, and Patrick—all a year apart. Phil Stoddard is also at the U. of Rochester finishing up a residency in plastic surgery."
Still in the medical field Al Gazzaniga reports that he is assistant professor of Surgery at the University of California Medical School in Irvine.
With all these doctors John Kavanagh should have it easy but his territory unfortunately doesn't include the U.S. "Joined E. R. Squibb in March '70 as International Product Manager for penicillins and semi-synthetic antibiotics. My territory is the world exclusive of the U.S. Have made two trips abroad since joining—the last one around the world in three weeks. Have spent most of my time in the Far East mainly the Philippines. Derreth and I are now starting a world wide collection of antiques to add to our collection from last seven years in New England. Now reside in Cranbury, N.J., which is really Princeton Junction. New job has potential for overseas assignment which I look forward to enormously." (And I thought my New England territory was big, ed.)
Chuck Neff has moved to the Indian Hills section of Cleveland, "How loyal can we get? Have four kids, ages eleven through six, two girls, two boys." Chuck is the area recruiting chairman for the Cleveland area while wife Mary is enjoying catering the Freshman Picnic.
I may be wrong, but I think AndyAnsaldi is the -first '58 to be elected chairman of the board of a bank. Andy has been elected to that position at the Manchester (Conn.) State Bank. Andy replaces Mayor Nathan Agostinelli who resigned to become comptroller for the State of Connecticut. The bank has been open since November 30, 1970. In accepting the position Andy said, "The purpose of the bank is to serve individuals and business firms in Manchester and surrounding towns. I will attempt to do all that is possible to insure that the Manchester State Bank becomes known as the financial institution for local needs in both personal and business uses." Andy has lived in Manchester all his life and is vice president of the Andrew Ansaldi Co., general contractors and land developers. He is vice president and director of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce and member of the Town Building Committee, the technical advisory committee of the Planning and Zoning Commission, Dartmouth Club of Hartford, Dartmouth Society of Engineers, and American Society of Civil Engineers. Andy and Kathy have four children.
John Otis has been appointed assistant treasurer of the Bank of New York. John has been with the bank since 1969 and is an account officer in the Metropolitan Division. In addition to his bank duties John is a director of the Junior Chamber of Commerce, Somerset Hills, N.J., and serves on the Somerset County, N.J., board of directors for the Cancer Fund.
