Your class officers have just enjoyed a three-day visit in Hanover together with several hundred similar officers. Those present were Sid Stoneman, Jan and Wes Beattie, Polly and Goerge Farrand, Jud Pierson, and Bea and I. Also attending many of the functions were Jean and John Meek. We missed Miriam Stoneman, Ginney Pierson, and Babe and Bob Fox.
The activities of the weekend are given in full detail in the main section of this issue so I will not attempt to highlight them. William Schlesinger '72, DOC president, is the son of our Bill Schlesinger. The principle topic was again whether or not there should be a Greater Feminine Presence on campus. A committee together with alternates was elected from the class officers to meet with college officials and trustees in June to study this question. WesBeattie is one of the alternates.
Don Murray writes from Beloit, Wis.: "I am still chairman of the Department of Modern Languages at Beloit College with seven more years to go before retirement. My two children, Andrea (16) and Cameron (12) still have their college years ahead of them. I have been very active in our program of foreign academic seminars and directed one of them: Sept. 1 to Dec. 20, 1970 in Costa Rica. I vacationed in Guadalajara, Mexico, from then until April 20 and have only just returned to campus to teach in our summer term—that's why I am being so tardy in answering your request."
Margaret and Norm Erlandson sent a card from Bath, England. "We've been having a delightful time. London cold but very exciting. Went to Hampton Court on a sunny Easter and it's grown warmer as we rove west this second week—we've been staying left o.k. We don't cover much territory but sure shift back and forth through the centuries."
When Bob S. Turner sent in his class dues, he included this news: "Just a note to report that Pete Grace, Marty Kerwin, and I are still alive and kicking. Mary Pete Grace alive and kicking. Mary and this summer, so this was a happy get-together for several Dartmouth families and friends. marty is on the road much of the time and when not on business, off to foreign countries on pleasure. My father, Leigh C. Turner '04, who was living with us, died in January. These tid-bits of news might bring you up to date from St. Louis."
Thanks to the distaff side, we have this news from Eleanor and Bill Bates: "Our daughter, Susan, is married to Dr. James H. Margraf who is a resident at Mary Hitchcock Hospital. They like being in the Hanover area and the Theriaults and Wrights, and Manchesters have been great to them—true to the 1933 spirit. Bill has recently been named treasurer of Connecticut General Life Insurance Company and all its subsidiaries."
From Charlottesville, Va., Bill Alden reports: "I am about to begin my first sabbatical in ten years. Have been buried in administration; three years as chairman, Foreign Language Department, University of Maryland; three years chairman, Modern Language Department, University of Virginia; four years as chairman, Romance Languages, University of Virginia. Now I get a year off in Paris and return to teaching. Bill Jones and I are rival candidates for the presidency of 11,000 member American Association of Teachers of French. Hope he wins because if he doesn't I have to come back in February. Now have three grandchildren. One son-in-law is a Ph.D. engineer in HEW (air pollution) and the other is first trumpet in the Dallas Symphony."
In the News: Paul Zamecnik in the April 19 issue of Time Magazine in the article "The New Genetics." Bob Estes was opposing counsel in a hypothetical antitrust case at the ABA National Institute on "Counseling Clients in Antitrust Matters" held in New Orleans.
Our memorial book program has provided Baker Library with nine new volumes during the past 12 months. Letters of appreciation have recently been received from Janet Doyle and Nancy Woods.
My special thanks to all of you who have sent in news items this past year. At this moment 1933 is doing extremely well in the Alumni Fund. Please see that your contribution is in by June 30 and also keep in mind the urgent need for a 25% increase.
As a final reminder, please mark your calendar on October 9 with a green D. Our fall reunion will be held at the Norwich Inn following the Penn football game. Please try to make it.
