Fall and the Alumni Magazine are with us again. Welcome back to the column after a summer of relaxation (?).
Joe Fater was honored as the National Leukemia Association's "Man of the Year" in recognition of his . service to that organization. Joe is prominent in New York state construction and labor circles, holds the rank of colonel in the Marine Corps Reserve and 'is a director of the Brooklyn Federal Savings and Loan Association.
Another Marine Corps Reserve colonel made news in Hanover in May as SteveHull played defense in the alumni-varsity lacrosse game. '45 holds the dubious honor of being the oldest class represented.
And while on the subject of athletics, one of last spring's Alumni Magazines carried the interesting information in the letters column that the Dartmouth ski team was once coached by a '45 — that's right, Bull Ashley was the team coach in 1944.
Recent correspondence has Dick Murray and family vacationing in the Colorado Rockies, and Ray O'Crowley on a new duty assignment. Ray's letter tells it all: "The O'Crowleys (Lt. Col. Myles R.) have landed in Seoul, Korea and the Koreans have withstood the shock. After about 18 "ears in SAC, half of them at headquarters in Omaha and the balance in the Midwest, the USAF decided we needed a change. At present, my assignment is with joint military assistance group. I'm the U. S. forces special liaison group chief with the minister of national defense for Korea and his joint chiefs of staff. Too new to evaluate, but it certainly is a change from running a missile maintenance squadron in Wichita, Kan. Anytime you international travelers get this way, I'm the only O'Crowley listed. You-all call us!!"
Tom Candler also takes pen in hand to bring us up to date: "Our oldest daughter Cyndie entered Stephens College last fall, was elected president of her class and this year she'll be vice president of the student government . . . Number two daughter Pam will be a senior at GP North and is still undecided about college, tho probably will follow her sister to Stephens. Susie will be a sixth grader and will be our last chance for Dartmouth. That's her goal. Kaye, my better half, is a Stephens gal and we have been quite active in their parents club. I am a member of the executive board of the Dad's Club. ... I was honored recently by the maritime group in Detroit and I now am the mayor of the Detroit River." Sec. note—this is an honor given annually to a member of the Propeller Club, Tom having served as president of that club some ten years ago.
Paul Caravatt is chairman of the board of a new video publishing firm in New York which is named, not surprisingly, Caravatt, Kleiman, Inc. According to the founders, they intend to utilize video cassettes to extend the printed picture or word — not to supersede books and as yet they aim only at instruction, not entertainment. All this is explained in a news release from our former Newsletter Editor.
This was the summer for visiting '45s, at least in the state of Maine. Molly andJohn White entertained the Burt Hicocks and the Dave Kendalls. Barbara andJack Rothwell's Maine visit occasioned a medical school reunion which saw the Rothwells, Nancy and Pete Beck, Anne, and Howie Sawyer join the Coles for a evening. Ginny and Harry Hampton spent time at the Sawyer camp at Raymond and hoped to see Jane and Tom Yates at Owl's Head.
The Brown weekend of October 20-23 will find the Class assembled in Hanover for its fall football reunion and class officers' meeting. The Class headquarters will be at the Shady Lawn Motel in Hartford, as has been usual for the past several years. The weekend is a long one, what with Veteran's Day falling on that Monday, and the past fall reunions have been most enjoyable, so plan to head for Hanover and join the fun. See you there!!!
