Mini reunions, changed leadership on the Foreign Student Scholarship Program, a few notes on one or two classmates and news of the accidental deaths of two others open up the year. Whatever 1956 did with the summer has been kept very quiet.

Buddy Schattman has turned the Foreign Student Program over to EgilStigum, a fine choice. Buddy did an outstanding job of providing the necessary coordination and it can only be hoped that more class members and their families will have a chance to meet these outstanding Dartmouth students whose education, in part, is financed without help. It can be a fine experience for all concerned. Tom Knott and his family saw Ng Poh Hua briefly in San Francisco following graduation when Poh was en route home to Malaysia. The whole Knott family enjoyed Poh's earlier stay with them and it was a mixture of emotions to say farewell. Incidentally, Tom and Wendy celebrated their 15th wedding anniversary in June and among their many friends and acquaintances at quite a large bash were a healthy sampling of local Dartmouth people.

Bill and Norma Beagle were hosts to Yuan Kit Ha, another '56 scholar, for several weeks early in the summer, and my family had a chance to meet this fine young fellow during that visit. Yuan Kit will be a Senior Fellow in Physics this year. Jackand Beth Crowley are permanent residents of the Northwest. In a recent letter Jack mentioned turning down a transfer to Boston to join North American Life in Seattle, where offspring Dick, Jake and Kate are thriving too. Jack plays some hockey and reports Dave Whiteford, another eastern transplant, is active in the Portland Lacrosse Club, Oregon. Seattle native, Larry Shaw, gets in as much sailing as he can.

In corporate news, Phil Langtry has gone to the Atlanta offices of PPG Industries as district sales manager, contract and supply. Jim Flynn has been appointed general manager of the chemical systems department of the science products division of the Corning Glass Works. Bache & Co. has elected Pete Bernard a senior vice president and Alkie Voulgaris has joined the Indian Head Bank of Nashua as vice president.

Norm Fiering a senior fellow of the Institute of Early American History and Culture and Assistant Professor of History at the College of William and Mary has recently been appointed editor of publications of the Institute. Ted Briggs completed a year at the National War College near Washington earlier this summer. The Reverend Joe Elliott has helped with the success story of an inner-city parish. St. Paul's in the Bronx opened in 1853, and, after a hundred years went into a decline reflecting changes in the community around it. Now it has taken on new life, and once again supports its own rector and its own program.

That was Wally Rogers you saw winning over $1,000 on the TV program Who, What or Where back in August.

Jon Gunderson is a new vice president of the advertising firm, J. Walter Thompson. Jon is a member of the financial department with particular responsibility for group insurance plans, profit sharing retirement trust, and overseas pension and benefit plans. Jon joined Thompson in 1970 having previously been with Bankers Trust and McKinsey & Company, also in New York.

The obituary section of this Magazine should have notices of the death of Dr. Henry S. Bloom and Donald R. Marriott. Hank and Don each died accidentally in unrelated events. Hank died in Connecticut in the summer of 1970 and news of his death reached the College slowly. The only information additional to the notice is that friends wishing to remember him in a special way may contribute to the Henry S. Bloom Memorial Library, Albert Einstein College of Medicine, Eastchester Road, Bronx, N. Y.

Don Marriott's death in New Jersey in an air accident early this summer was equally stunning news. Apparently Don's light plane was missing for a period of days during which time Fred Baker, a Pan Am pilot and boyhood friend of Don's and LenClark, a former Navy pilot and also a friend from high school days were part of the search crews along with Don's older brother, Vincent J. Marriott, 1951. The grim weather of the week made all efforts slow going and the remnants of hurricane Agnes were still haunting the area on the day of the memorial service which was attended by Ted Bremble and Len Clark. Don's friends and classmates at Verona High School have established the Donald Richard Marriott Memorial Fund as a high school or college award in his memory. Contributions may be sent to the Fund at the American National Blank and Trust Co., 475 Bloomfield Avenue, Montclair, N. J. 07042.

Rick Worrell's mini reunion on October 21 in Hanover sounds like the best ever. Parties, child care, 50-yard line football tickets, the works. If somehow the further details have escaped you and you find you can get away then, get in touch with Richard D. Worrell, 54 Irving Avenue, Providence, Rhode Island 02906. For the other home games this year Bill Carleton has arranged BYOB cocktail parties, post game in the Faculty Lounge at Hopkins Center.

Ng Poh Hua '72, a Class of 1956 ForeignScholar, enroute home to Malaysia, hada stopover in San Francisco and therewas greeted by Tom Knott '56.
