This might have been expected—my Christmas mail contained many comments about coeducation at Dartmouth. Most of these voiced disapproval of the step taken. However, Faith, daughter of ClarenceButterfield, expressed great disappointment that she was not able in her time to attend Dartmouth because she was a girl but had to settle for Colby Junior College. Josephine Buckminster, daughter of Arthur Kimball, wrote, "I regret so much that Dartmouth went coed three years after my daughter entered college. How I would have loved to have had another Kimball at Dartmouth."
Am glad to report that Ina Norris, sister of 'Art' Wallace, who has been hospitalized for several weeks is making a good recovery from a heart attack.
Gilbert Balkam, son of 'Cuddy' Balkam, writes, "Altho mother was doing quite nicely for her age, it seemed wise to have her nearer her family, and so she was moved from Cape "Cod to the Berkshire Nursing Center on Long Island. Her eldest son Steve '29 is in San Diego and her youngest son Bob and his family live in England. Daughter Lucelia lives near Boston and is very much occupied with family affairs. Mother now has 17 great-grandchildren to keep track of and this helps fill her days."
Elizabeth Gaffney, daughter of GeorgeTong, because of a knee injury, was hospitalized at U.S. Public Service Hospital in Seattle. There she was attended by a young surgeon, a Dartmouth alumnus '61, who, after getting his M. D. at University of Washington, interned at Mary Hitchcock in Hanover. She remarks, "It is a small world."
