We regret to say that Bill Brown has been laid low with a heart attack. Jane called to say he had experienced chest pains the last six months but the doctors could find nothing in the cardiograph, then it hit on January 20 putting Bill in the Gloucester hospital where Larry Brooks is public relations man. He's getting along OK but will be home for a spell and would appreciate getting a card or two. Just send it to Rockholm, Gloucester, Mass. 01930, that's their home and no street address needed.
Speaking of sick bay, a card from WhiteyFuller says to tell Rog Allen to count his blessings as Whitey had an ileostomy a year ago and it's no fun. He retired from the Navy February 1971 and we quote his card, "1 like being a confederate. The Class has done a fine thing on the Gordie Bennett Memorial. John Handrahan's death was a shock—two of the nicest people in the Class. Katie's comments in the Mint Bag about the advantages of the Dartmouth family across the country goes for Virginia Beach also. Virginia and I are only a minute or so from the Chesapeake Bridge Tunnel, Route 13 on the way to Florida or points south."
Don Bumont's wonderful Polly tells us via Xmas card that Don, as president of the Greater Hartford Real Estate Board, has had conventions in California and Florida, and she gets to enjoy these fringe benefits saying that by adding a week they get to look up old friends. She is also up tight about Dartmouth as coed, saying you can't improve perfection and she likes it the way it was.
Stan Lappin drops a note saying he and Irene with Connie and Stan Berenson took advantage of the Boston Alumni Association's Copenhagen trip last November. It was great and they got an added bonus in the form of a visit with Fred Vogt whom Stan describes as the best preserved classmate we have and a warm host. Fred asked them about many classmates and Stan farther says Fred's interest in them and the College is undiminished.
Dud Meredith is still with Reynolds Metals in Richmond, Va., but now as a Division Cost Analyst in their main office. He works with four plants (2 Alabama, 1 Chicago) that make up the Sheet, Plate Wire Rod & Bar. He recently acquired responsibility for the two Reclamation plants that process the aluminum cans they buy back from us beer and coke drinkers.
Ed Temple's address is now Box 54, Melbourne Beach, Fla. 32951. We thought he was a permanent Cape Codder but he finds he can conduct his plastic business (The Mediplastic Co.) from there while avoiding some of the unpleasant aspects of living in Massachusetts vis-a-vis Florida. Ed's a bit bitter about the College today without ROTC etc. and sounds similar to many of the letters to the editor of the Alumni Magazine through the past three years.
A nice letter from Joe DeMay says he has no justifiable excuse for being out of touch other than he has seven children, four now in college, a short breathing spell, then three sons heading in the same direction. He has been in his own export-import business in New York since leaving military service in 1946 and since he travels overseas quite extensively he has not had the opportunity to participate in reunions as he would have liked or even to see some of his old classmates. He is glad for this column and the Mint Bag for keeping him informed and that is always delightful to hear.
For about ten years now we keep hearing Dana Prescott is about to retire. Their gorgeous Christmas card of the whole family lined up on skis in Colorado says now Dana retires in a year. They remain at the Presidio overlooking San Francisco Bay but continue to try to see as much of this country as possible. Of their two Dartmouth sons, Dan is a Ist lieutenant, ordnance, heading for Vietnam, and Craig, a captain, field artillery, stationed at Long Binh, Vietnam.
The information cards were sent out to you all for the new class directory and will be printed up by Bill Rotch some time this spring. Although the deadline for the cards return and the arrival of this column in your hands is close, please let this be a reminder to GET IT IN NOW. A directory is only as good as you make it with up-to-date information.
