Last month, at Class Officers weekend, the Class was represented by president Peter Hofman, who was here with wife Phylis, reunion chairman John McNamara, reunion giving chairman Ed Heald with wife Ham, and secretary Eric Jones. A record breaking number of officers attended and learned all about The Dartmouth Plan, as well as study abroad programs, new concepts in student housing, and what three weeks in the life of our President, John Kemeny, are like (I assure you the energy this man has is considerable! The schedule he follows is awesome! And his wife is his biggest public relations asset!). The weekend was capped by a fine performance of the Verdi Requiem which included the Dartmouth Glee Club, the Smith Choir and Glee Club, and the Harvard Glee Club, in concert with the Dartmouth Symphony Orchestra.
Reunion June 15-18 is almost upon us. We will get together in just a few days! So far it shapes up with approximately 130 people coming, although many could arrive who didn't know until the last minute. EVERYONE is most sincerely urged to try and make it. John has done a great job preparing, along with the classes of 1966 and 1967. Try and join us. Four Years in; Four Years out.
The Alumni Fund and Class Dues are still being collected. Things look good this year, in that percentages of participation are up from last year to date. Our own class so far has had 39% pay their dues of $10, which I hope will rise considerably in the next few days. Dollar figures are up considerably. The campus is peaceful and students are busy persuing their studies. THIS IS A REUNION YEAR. PLEASETRY TO GIVE MORE.
Wick Walker is here in New Hampshire training and keeping U. S. Olympic hopes alive in the Whitewater slalom kayak event. The Army has given him time off' to train here on the Mascoma River. Wick recently was the subject of a Boston Sunday Globe article which stressed the skills and stamina needed in this exciting sport. The Class wishes him and the other American Olympic hopefuls our very best.
Bob Montgomery was hard at it again last fall. His "Subject to Fits" arrived in London in October as part of the initial R.S.C.'s Studio season at The Place: an open-plan ballet workshop rearranged into a three-sided arena around a terraced set gigantically surmounted by a pair of mad Dostoyevskian eyes. I haven't heard from Gummer in some time, but I hope he is creating new things for me to write about in future.
Jon Axelrod is busy recruiting candidates for class officers to be. I let him know I hope to run again and I hope each of you who is interested has done the same. CliffGroen wrote to tell me he had lunch recently with Jon and will be on hand to help him count the votes. Cliff also had lunch with Jack Sedwick recently and notes Jack is graduating from Harvard Law this year, and going on to Anchorage for private law practice. Howie Anderson and Cliff got together too; Howie is with the New Jersey Attorney General's office, involved in combatting political corruption and organized crime. Cliff regrets not being able to be with us at Reunion, but will be at the Democratic Convention sessions at that time.
John and Linda Melski will soon be a part of the Big Green Scene, because John is an intern at Mary Hitchcock after completing his studies at Johns Hopkins Medical School. The Melskis will be living in nearby Norwich. They mentioned that a recent visit to Dave and Diane Peck produced the information that the Pecks are leaving for Yugoslavia and Greece to take part in an archaeological dig. Sounds like fun!
Shaker Heights was the scene of RandyBlair's marriage last winter to Kathy Lenahan of Sewickley, Pa. Randy went to the London School of Economics after graduation and is president of Konran/Media, Inc., a photographic organization in Cleveland.
The Fund established for the memory of Tony Goit last September, and which will be used to purchase books for Baker Library, has now reached a total of $2,580.00. Those classmates still wishing to earmark funds for this special memorial may do so.
As another suimer approaches, and this magazine year ends, thanks to all of you who have taken the time to correspond. Though I sometimes resort to harangue, I am truly grateful to you for all the mail I do get. To start us off in the fall, I would like to address the following topic: How I Feel About Dartmouth Now That I Look Back. Please write me your thoughts about this and be specific about what your impressions of the NOW Dartmouth are. Have a great summer.
