After almost 26 years as president of the National Bank of Commerce, Seattle, Max Carlson retired on September 1. Max went with the bank after graduating from Tuck School and advanced rapidly through the ranks, becoming president 18 years later at the age of 42. He will continue as a director of the bank and its parent. Marine Bancorp.

Attorney Fred Tilton is a member of a legal tribunal at the Pentagon to which cases of offenses allegedly committed by members of the Armed Forces are referred. Until 1952 Fred was an attorney in Laconia, N.H.

Hank and Helen Graupner sent greetings on September 12 from Varna, Bulgaria, with the remark "Haven't found any '28ers." Elly and Nellie Jones of Cave Creek, Ariz., went to Europe after Reunion and a card from Athens reached us after a slight delay - addressed to Troy, N.Y., it went to Troy, Mich., and then Troy, Pa. Why it reached us so quickly we don't know because there are 14 towns named Troy in this country.

The longest trip reported this year was by Vic and Mary Hartjens of Alexandria, Va., who left New Orleans in March on a cargo liner (80 passengers) and returned four months later. They stopped in Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Thailand, Burma and other places too numerous to mention.

Vic and Mary had a most enjoyable three-day visit in Kaohsiung, on the southern tip of Taiwan, with Joe Chay and his son. Joe's wife Moon was out of the city attending a wedding. Joe and his son called for them the first thing in the morning and stayed with them until bedtime, and were delightful hosts. Vic sent us a snapshot of Joe and himself taken at Joe's starch factory, which we hope is bright enough to use in the Magazine. Joe and Moon's two daughters were educated in California universities, married American boys and one now lives in California and one in Houston, Texas.

Vic also had a nice visit, over a three-hour lunch, with Hsi-Jui Shen, and learned a great deal about his life since graduation and then Tuck School, and much about current conditions in the Far East. He is the semi-retired director of the Hong Kong Shanghai Bank, largest in the Far East.

Ed Flanders is retiring October 18 after 45 years with Encyclopaedia Britannica Educational Corp. and F.E. Compton & Co. which merged with Britannica in 1961. His and Dora's son. John Edwin, is 12 and Ed hopes to have him graduating from Dartmouth in June 1983, at our 55th Reunion. Ed was made New England manager in 1951. A native of Manchester, N.H., Ed has lived there all his life.

After spending the summer in Richmond. Maine, Merrill and Grace Hodsdon are back home at 85 Penny Lane, Stuart, Fla ... Bob Rockhill's widow Ann has moved from New York City to Wiscasset, Maine.

One item at our reunion banquet was overlooked in our report in the July issue - Madeline McGrath took a bow for having the most grandchildren - 17. Madeline and her late husband. Jack, had five children.
