The deadline for this May column and the annual start on the Alumni Fund drive always come at the same time - April Fool's day, and there must be a hidden message of some sort but I can't figure it out, so I'll merely urge you to send in your share if by now you have not done so. Head Agent Curtis and his assistants hope to bring our Class up this year.
News of members of the Class in the public press is a little skimpy this month however one of our prominent members of the bar was shown in a photograph on the front page of The New YorkTimes in connection with the C.I.A., I.T. & T and the government of Chile. Phil Gilbert still represents the Company in its various relations with governmental investigations. Also we read that Robert Fernald has been appointed to the newly created position of Director of Real Estate Services for NL Industries (formerly National Lead Co.). Bob will supervise the sale and purchase of all real estate for all of the company's divisions. Bob and Tanna live in Green Village N.J., and have two daughters, Carol and Kathy.
Basil Coutrakon, whose son Peter is a junior in Hanover, made an interesting comment on the card he sent back to me. Basil and Katie live in Springfield, Ill., where he is employed by the U.S. Government as a referee in bankruptcy. Daughter Laurel graduated from Chatham College in Pittsburgh last year and Liz is at Wheaton College. I'll quote from his card What's New? "Nothing, except I'm broke all the time! What else is new!" This makes me wonder if there is some special coincidence here or is it the fact most of us have the same problem with today's cost of living.
Eugene Anspach is still president of his own optical firm in East Orange, N.J. He has one daughter Norma as a college freshman and the other, Barbara, is a high school senior. Gene keeps busy in addition to his business activities, with gardening, social service, and work with A.A.
Curtis and Mary Comstock also live in New Jersey in Wyckoff. Curt commutes to 320 Park Avenue, N.Y.C., where he is manager, visitor services for I.T. & T. ... He and Mary have three sons: Curt Jr. '66 who lives in Albuquerque, N.M., where he is a banker; Stuart (Miami U. Ohio) and Peter (U. of Washington) are both in the East. Curt says he plans early retirement in May 1978.
Bill and Mim Macurda still live in New England where Bill is president of Tenney Fuels in Concord, N.H. They show up fairly regularly at football games and other class and college events in the East. Son Bill works for Eastman Kodak in Dallas while daughter Judith is married and teaching in the Peace Corps in Kathmandu, Nepal, for two years. Bob Marvin is co-publisher and editor of the Beatrice (Nebraska) Daily Sun. He and Dottie live in Beatrice as do their two sons Robert and David. Robert is in the business with his dad and David is marking time after a rough hitch in Vietnam. Bob and his family have been in the newspaper business in Beatrice for more than 90 years. Like many other 36ers, they were in France and Italy in 1971 and in Spain last fall. No report on next travel plans.
Henry and Virginia Holmes live in Glen Head, N.Y., where Harry has just started a small new company to sell synthetic papers after spending many years with Columbia Ribbon & Carbon. They still have one of their three children in law school and also four grandchildren. Harry is still deputy mayor of the Village of Old Brookville, N.Y.
George Marsh lives with his wife Margaret in Park Ridge, Ill., and George is VP in charge of Sales for Morton Mercantile Co. They have two sons and two grandchildren. George and Meg visited Hanover in 1971 for her first visit and he reports she fell in love with Dartmouth, Hanover, and New Hampshire. Perhaps we'll see them at the next reunion.
I have been having some correspondence with Dr. Robert Ingersoll regarding our 20th Reunion which he ran (I'm trying to accumulate information on all reunions in case you have any lists of attendance, etc.), and I have the feeling Bob has found a pretty successful formula for combining work and play. He and Mardie live in a trailer in Key Largo, Fla., where he maintains his practice in orthopedics. He also finds time to fish, live on the water, boat, play golf, read, swim, and I think they raise dogs! They have a motor coach which they hope to drive to a reunion one of these days.
A final comment - the March issue of the Alumni Magazine has a column by Bruce Kimball '73 "The Undergraduate Chair," which I think is very thought provoking in this time when there is such a difference of opinion among all alumni as to what the College should be and how it should get there.
