The 15th Annual Dartmouth Cup Ski Race was held on Sunday, April 8, at Arapahoe Basin, one of Colorado's standard spectacular ski areas. The ski report for April 8 at Arapahoe Basin: 78 inch base, 4 inches new snow, packed, packed powder and snowing.

This event is conducted by the Association of the Great Divide for competing secondary school ski teams. Everyone benefits — the young skiers, the coaches, co-sponsoring schools, the Association, (there was some little profit this year) and hopefully in the long run, the Enrollment Committee. Nor does the name of Dartmouth lose any luster from this race — clearly a Dartmouth function, from its promotion to the final awarding of trophies. The Ned. Grant Memorial Trophy, awarded to the top performer, was presented this year by Pat Grant, son of the late Ned Grant '30. The Dartmouth Cup goes to the winning team — captured this time by the Colorado Academy team. which happened to have been coached by JoelMonell '62.

The cooperative participation of 12 secondary school teams, the congratulations from coaches and Arapahoe Basin officials on a well-managed race, all were tribute to the chief organizer, motivator and manager of this project, Dr. JackJacobey '51, and the key people on his committee: timers Lee Ambrose '59 and Bucky Allen'71; course setter Jim DeLong '61 and assistant John Meek '67; Anson Mark '53, head gate keeper: Lane McBurney '69, referee; DonMcMichael '53, chief starter. Jack Jacobey's wife Sue did yeoman service — literally and figuratively - as secretary and accountant.

The finish line was resplendent with a twentyfoot banner, three feet high, with "Finish" on the uphill side and "Dartmouth" plainly on the public side. Nearby were refreshments, procured by Patty 'Mrs. Anson) Mark '53. A keg of beer, in fact, for weary workers and other hangers on.

Part of Chairman Jacobey's scheme to generate enthusiasm and attendance among the Association membership was to hold a pre-race cocktail party on Wednesday evening precediing the race. Twenty-five or more interested people attended this party at downtown Denver's University Club. The race was off to a fine start.

On Saturday our April blizzard hit the entire State of Colorado. It was a crippler. It did effect general attendance, but Jacobey's crew and par ticipating teams did get there. The course was set, and the race was run - in an efficient professional manner, and with great satisfaction.

A good time was had by all officers and trustees of the Association of the Great Divide at anapparently agreeable planning session. Seated (l to r) Jim McElhinney '61, Sey Wheelock40, Hank Edler '53, Don McMichael '53, and Bob Halbert '59, president; and (rear) JoeGadd '63, Fred Fisher '63, Don Jones '43, Pete Wells '63, Bruce Espey '4O, Al Krutsch '59.Len Waldbaum '63, and Joe Marx '59.
