As we pen these notes, we are on the threshold of taking off for the Vermont hills. We look forward to this after six months in the Deep South. When you read these notes, it will be mid-June. 1973 will be graduating with hundreds of caps and gowns all over the library green. 1918 will be celebrating at their 55 Reunion - and happy landings to you, boys! News has been scarce and largely about the same fine guys.
From Tracy Kohl of Sedona, Ariz., a clip about Ax Warden's death and, "About six weeks ago we had a good, long visit, in Tucson, with Ashby Warden Hardy, Ax and Hebe Warden's older daughter, whom we have known since she was a youngster and I visited Alex to flyfish some of his Montana streams." He reports also a visit from Pat and George Stoddard '18 who were directed to Sedona by Bill and Nancy Eads whom they saw in Phoenix.
Spider Martin reports a letter from Chet andEmily Gale which said they would be in Hanover in early May and that he wished to have a golf game with us. Sorry, Chester, we are still safely in the South where we can't be taken by such journeymen as you. While in Scotsdale, Spider tried to reach Althea Rautenberg, Ernie's widow, in Sun City, Ariz., but after several tries gave up supposing her to be on a trip. The Martins saw a lot of Florence Stecher who was in Scotsdale for a month. Her son and his wife and their children came to visit her while she was there and after they went home, she took off for Maine. Chance to get rested up. Spider talked with Jack Ross who was as usual in Palm Springs for a while but they did not get in their customary game of golf.
We first had word of Guy Cogswell's death from our President Nick Sandoe. A real blow. It brought to our mind at once a quote from Bill McCarter's book, "The Hanover Scene." He was speaking of the years after the close of World War I, and he said, "The next year the real men came back - Canned, Cunningham and Cogswell..." Guy will be missed and the sympathy of all of us to you, Muriel. The McCrillises, Lewises, Merrills, Spen Dodd, and the Sandoes were at the services in Henniker and Muriel had them all over to the house afterward. Also from Sandoe, we think but we can't find the letter, came word that Jack and Hester McCrillis and Marshall andPeggy Chadwell plan a trip to Switzerland in late May. Don't be surprised if you hear that McCrillis has been skiing down the steep side of the Matterhorn with Chadwell on his back.
From Delray Beach, our favorite ear-to-the-oround, George Rand says he thinks that Stu and Jane Russell plan to be on Cape Cod in August and in Hanover in September. Rock Hayes has been having a "go" of surgery. The day he wrote Alice Earle called to say that everything went fine, and George was planning to see him the next day. The Hayeses will be in Charleston, W. Va. for the summer as usual and maybe in Hanover in September. George and Marion themselves plan to go to Denver in July to see Marion's daughter, her husband, Dr. Dave Stephenson '46 and Marion's grandchildren. Hopefully they will be in Hanover for a short time in September.
Spider Martin and John McCrillis, dauntless co-chairmen for our 55th Reunion, request that we remind you of the dates. They are June 7-9, 1974, Those who are planning trips around the world or visits to Disneyland should schedule these things for some other tint?. No cuts will be granted. Then there is the Alumni Fund. It closes June 30 so get about it and send in your contributions. At this point Freddie, our pet fly, who is watching from a ticklish place on our forehead, remarks, "You're a fine one to talk." Patiently, we remind him that we are late only because we are trying to get the money. He gives us a look, skeptical to say the very least, then asks, "Will they take Green Stamps?"
