Here we go again! If we've made it through 1974 so far I guess we can make it the rest of the way. Your class officers all hope this fall season finds you in good health and looking forward to the autumn football get togethers. Our class social chairman, Bill Breed, has informed me the results of Sam Wallis' questionnaire were very gratifying and most useful in planning the fall activities. We will leave the details of each weekend's plan to the newsletter (which you may have already received) but there are at least three or four class activities planned. First, of course, is the Princeton weekend in Hanover. As many of you know our class and '53 have been taking an early weekend in October, this year it is the 12th, to enjoy not only the game in Hanover, but also the beautiful fall foliage in New Hampshire and Vermont. We will once again be staying at Twin Lakes Villa in New London and a big dinner is planned at The Hideaway Saturday night.
The next big weekend is October 26, again in Hanover for the Harvard game. Since this is the first Harvard game in Hanover since who knows when there will be a huge crowd. Our class and '53 will again join for both pre-game and postgame activities and it should take on the size of a mini-reunion. Don't let the crowds scare you. Make plans to join your classmates for this big weekend.
Finally, there is the Yale game in New Haven the weekend of November 2. Bill tells me he is working with several members of the Class for another good chance for the Class to hoist a few before and after the game.
Now for some class news. Had a chance to get together in July with Bob Herr for a brief visit and get caught up on his activities. Bob is vice president of Chase Manhattan Bank in New York and responsible for the World Trade District in the Corporate Bank group. Bob and his family reside in Rumson, N.J., hard by the shore.
When we closed out our comments in the June issue of the Alumni Magazine we commented that Andy Jackson was the only member of our class living in Wyoming. Since then the class population in Wyoming has increased 100% because the Jack Van Baalen family has moved west from the Philadelphia area to Laramie. Jack has written to tell us he is now a professor at the College of Law, University of Wyoming. Jack, Lynn, and family are residing at 1315 Lewis Street in Laramie.
We have also received news of the promotion of Alden Guild to assistant vice presidentL counsel and assistant secretary of National Life Insurance Company of Vermont. Alden has been with National Life since 1957 and has been an officer of the company since 1962. He is also an officer of several subsidiaries and affiliates of National Life. Alden, his wife Ruth, and their daughter Heather reside in Montpelier, Vt.
Of course everyone knows one of the major attractions of New York is Madison Square Garden and we are pleased to report the new president of the corporation is Alan Cohen. Al was elected president in June coming over to MSG from Warner Communications where he had been a vice president. After leaving Hanover Al graduated from Columbia Law School and he now resides in Manhattan.
We don't consider this column to be a forum for fund raising for the College but the fact of the matter is that Dartmouth, just like most of us as individuals, is now caught in the combined squeeze of inflated operating costs, high interest rates, and the uncertainties of the economy. Therefore, we believe it is significant to report that our class president, John Rosenwald, has set up a Class Resource Committee to work on a continuing basis with our class agent, JackBarclay, in assisting the College with as much support as possible from members of our class. Approximately 40 classes have now set up committees of this type and we believe each member of the Class should be interested in supporting this activity. Our class committee is composed of Peter McSpadden, Jim Toffey, Marcel Durot,"Ceb" Benisch, and Steve Mandel. Of course, Messers Rosenwald and Barclay are members and Frank Logan, an officer of the College responsible for this type activity, will assist and coordinate committee plans with Dartmouth. We will report further progress as appropriate.
