Who will be the first '63 to marry a Dartmouth graduate? The question arose this past July on the grass of Lafayette Park, in front of the White House, where I stumbled across bachelor lawyers Mike Cardozo and Blake Franklin. Mike seemed fully recovered from his service in the Muskie campaign.
My thanks to Mike's father, incidentally, for explaining the nature of the case that Bob Wagstaff argued successfully before the Supreme Court. Bob's client challenged under the Sixth Amendment an Alaska court's decision to deny his defense counsel the right to cross-examine a prosecution witness on the latter's juvenile probationary status. The Supreme Court ruled 7-2 that the right to confront a witness superseded the state's policy of protecting a juvenile offender.
