An archaeologist brings to light articles and other artifacts relating to past history. In a way Dick Parkhurst is an archaeologist as he has discovered some Dartmouth history. Dick made his unusual discovery in the attic of Weston, Vt., cousin while he was examining old books. One of the books was published in Leipzig in 1828 and it was a text used by Dartmouth students. It was used by Samuel Allison Holmes during his undergraduate years of 1840-1842. A later owner was Broughton Davis Harris who graduated in 1845. The end and fly leaves carry names of students, although no dates are shown. Within the book there are sketches made by students of the professor of Greek propounding the text. This title, The Historiae Holcarnassaeiof Heroditus Libra IX, is now in the hands of Edward Lathem, Dartmouth librarian, and Archivist Ken Cramer will give his close scrutiny to the names inscribed on the pages to identify other Dartmouth students of those long ago days.
Les and Margaret Leavitt have set up a record for the distribution of their family. It has become an international family with a daughter in London, a son in Rhodesia, a grandson in Brazil and a granddaughter with a great-grandson in Scotland.
