Undergraduate Twoters were completely oblivious to the concept of putting men on the moon. Going into orbit for us consisted chiefly of acquiring the train fare to Boston. But the Class did have its budding scientists. For example, Bob Bartlett was majoring in Biology; John Hardy in Graphics and Engineering; Max Kenyon and Charlie Throop in Math; Gaylord Anderson, Hal Burnham, Tom Lenci, Ralph Spotts, and Fred Vogel in Chemistry; Warren Daniell, John Fancher, and Jim Nelson in Physics. And Wally Bernache, Godfrey Canty, Bob Dewey, Larry Farnham, and Art Coakley were becoming engineers at Thayer School.
Kyoichiro Takeuchi was another young scientist closely associated with the Class of 1922. With us as we received our baccalaureates on June 20, 1922, he received his master of science degree in Physics. He had previously received his baccalaureate in electrical engineering from Tokyo University. At Dartmouth he became the student and close friend of Professor Gordon Ferrie Hull, a privilege many of us shared. Because he was a highly esteemed contemporary, many Dartmouth men of our era will be interested in his distinguished career. Returning to Japan, Kyoichiro was for eight years Professor of Electrical Engineering at Yokohama Higher Technical College. For the next 15 years he was manager and director of the Komatsu Manufacturing Co. In 1949 he became general manager of the Sagami Engineering Works, Ltd., and a few years later he was named president of the company, a large construction equipment manufacturing organization. For ten years after the war his company was the contractor for repairing U.S. Army engineering equipment. He is the nephew of former Premier Yoshida who went to San Francisco to sign the peace treaty. At that time Kyoichiro wrote to Professor Hull, "I hope the treaty comes out good for both nations." And to our mutual hopes, so it has. Kyoichiro and his wife Yasuko were married 43 years ago and they live in Chigasaki, Kanagawa, Japan. Their two sons Keuchi and Shunji, are both graduates of Tokyo University. Kyoichiro still holds fond memories of Dartmouth and after all these years it is a privilege to extend the hands of our fellowship to him and his family.
For the preceding highly welcomed report '22 is grateful to Attorney Robert F. Wilson '21 presently living in Tokyo.
Harry Bruckner and Dr. John McKoan for some time now have been home following hospitalization. To the pleasure of all classmates, their convalescence is reported as progressively satisfactory.
Les and Nan Wagner have left the cold of Illinois for the warmth of Florida. They are wintering at Sun City Center on the west coast. They will, we hope, join the Florida Alumni Association at St. Petersburg. There, with a little bit of luck, they could run into classmates Webster Garst and Jim Martin from Bradenton; Al Acker, Dunedin; Wally Aschenback, GunnyGunnison, Fred Sargent, Sarasota; LarryFarnham and Don Spaulding, Tampa. Greetings from Hanover - and three feet of snow - to you all plutocrats down there.
George Busher, Wayne Shirley, and JohnWeare have left us deeply in bereavement. Their obituaries will appear in this or a later issue.
Spring will bring two enticing occasions for the Class to get together. Twenty-Two's customarily enjoyable weekend at the Hanover Inn will be Friday and Saturday, April 26-27. As usual, the Inn is holding rooms for us and a note or telephone to the Inn (603-643-4300) will assure a reservation. About six weeks or later, the Annual Informal Reunion for all Post-50 Year Classes will be Monday, June 10 - Wednesday, June 12. A most attractive program has been arranged. The Honarary Chairman of this Reunion will be 22's esteemed contemporary and friend, former Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Charlie Zimmerman '23. So, you'll miss a most enjoyable get-together if you don't attend at least one of the happy occasions - or better still, come to both.
