Now that the holidays are behind us, we can devote our attentions to surviving the winter of our discontent. Almost every activity is affected by the energy crisis, from the weekend trips to that Vermont ski house, to keeping our pets warm at the lower temperature. I fear a rise in the birth rate as there is no energy crisis in that area. Which leads us to our first news item.

Medical care for newborn infants in a number of hospitals throughout Monroe County (N.Y.) will be coordinated by the pediatrics department of the University of Rochester Medical Center and directed by Dr. Arthur Kopelman, assistant professor of pediatrics. Art is director of the nursery at UR's Strong Memorial Hospital and at Rochester General. These two have intensive care units that serve all area hospitals and Art's responsibility is to work with directors of nurseries in each in order to facilitate newborn care and avert costly duplication of services. One of the main thrusts will be the prevention of brain damage in newborns. In addition, Art will continue his research in jaundice, a common condition in newborns that in its most severe form can cause brain damage. After Dartmouth, Art received his medical degree from the U. of Rochester, interned at Strong and served his residency in pediatrics at Strong and at Yale-New Haven Hospital. He was a fellow in neonatology at Johns Hopkins and joined the UR faculty in 1969. The good doctor and his wife are the parents of two children.

Gerry Huttrer and his family live out in Evergreen, Colo., where he was recently appointed senior geologist for Intercontinental Energy Corporation. Gerry is working primarily in geo-thermal research which is an exciting aspect of geology designed to develop new energy resources. The Bob Reids and their two daughters welcomed Jonathan Reid last June to their mortgaged home in suburban Wilmette. Bob is practicing internal medicine in Chicago and is an assistant professor at the newly reopened Rush Medical College. MikeCarroll received his Masters in Education from Hardin-Simmons University last summer. Mike is presently working as logistics/quality manager for Texas Aerospace Services in Abilene. His wife Joyce is an assistant professor of English at McMurry College in Abilene and is working on her doctorate at Rutgers during summer vacations.

We always hear from our military members at this time of year and what exotic parts of the world they have visited. Major Art Hill was in American Samoa this past summer to help prepare an agreement between the Department of Interior and the Department of Defense on providing health care for the American Samoans. Art says that we took over American Samoa over 50 years ago and bungled it while New Zealand took Western Samoa and did a good job. The Hills missed the Pan Am air crash in Tahiti by one day and are feeling very lucky. Major James Leavitt and family moved to Chantilly, Va., where they bought their first home. Jim is assigned to the Defense Communications Agency in Arlington. He's writing his thesis for an MBA-Tele-communications from New York Institute of Technology. The Leavitts have four children and their oldest son is a junior in high school. Don't you feel a little older after reading this? They also have two Lhasa Apsos which they brought with them from Taiwan.

The people in Hanover have asked us to limit our columns because of the high cost of paper. That's fine with me because news is not plentiful these days. However, if you send something in I promise to find the space.
