It was a rather dreary night in January in New York, but there was still a very good turnout of Dartmouth people to attend a cocktail hour and speech by President Kemeny. The event, which took place at Alice Tully Hall, Lincoln Center, and will undoubtedly be reported elsewhere in detail, was the occasion for President Kemeny to announce a new, dramatic student loan program for undergraduates. It also was the occasion, unfortunately, for him to detail some of the massive fuel expense problems facing the College this year.
During the cocktail hour we had a chance to talk with Si and Maxine Grolnick who had driven in from Long Island for the evening. Dr. Grolnick maintains his psychiatric practice in Forest Hills and it was good to get brought up to date on his activities.
We also had a nice visit with Dan Gutterman who maintains his practice of law in New York. He is, in addition, the legal counsel for the Dartmouth Club of New York which has recently merged with the Yale Club. Last winter Dan had indicated in a personal visit that he planned to attend our 20th Reunion. He did make a sincere effort according to his description of events, but he did not get all the way. Now, I suppose it would be unfair to hold Dan to this commitment, but he has stated he not only will attend our 25th Reunion, but he will do so by riding a bicycle left from New York to Hanover. It seems Dan has in his possession a bicycle left from our undergraduate days and it still has a Town of Hanover license plate with an expiration date of May 1952. Note to the reunion committee; put this item on the list of scheduled events for that weekend. I'll be impressed if he just rides it from White River. Maybe he could then auction the bike off" to someone who would ride it home. A recent issue of Business Week had a most interesting article on Brooke (Pete) Taylor and his business operations in Europe. Pete resides in Monaco, or to be more accurate, his family resides in Monaco. From what I know of Pete's activites he lives in an airplane. This article outlines the success Pete has had with his company, International Trading Corporation. ITC is a marketing agent in Europe for American manufacturers, primarily in the business machines field, and they maintain a network of offices throughout Europe.
For the third time in the last six months it is our sad duty to report the death of one of our classmates, Howard Markt. Howie was one of the leaders of our class and a very fine person.
Dick Dalbeck last occupied this space with a picture in 1969. He occupies it again this month by virtue of being elected a senior vice president of Maine's Unionmutual which he joined five years ago as vice president in charge of planning and marketing. His duties now are to manage the company's financial operations. Dick, you may remember, graduated Phi Beta Kappa and received his MBA from Tuck in 1953.
