WILLIAM H. Friesell Jr., whose name for decades has been linked with a mistake on the football field, died on June 23 at the age of 80.

As many will remember, Red Friesell was referee of the famous fifth-down game with Cornell in 1940. With six seconds remaining, he awarded the visiting Big Red, then ranked among the nation's best and riding the crest of a 17-game winning streak, an extra down; they scored and defeated Dartmouth 7-3. On Monday he cabled apologies for his "very grave error" to the Dartmouth captain, Lou Young. That afternoon Cornell conceded the game.

Red Friesell actually was one of the heroes of the game, his name linked with good sportsmanship.
