An official total of 1,047 loyal Sons of Dartmouth and 1,328 members of their families returned to Hanover during three separate periods Reunion Week to renew old friendships and observe both the changes in the College and those intangibles which keep it ever the same to alumni.
Although attendance records remained untoppled and the weather made no headlines - neither frost nor flood disrupted the pleasantries - there's no quibbling with sentiments expressed by men from '09 to '69 that Reunion '74 was "the greatest."
Frivolity there was a-plenty at class tents and picnics; more sedate fellowship at class dinners and visiting in the President's garden; and entertainment at Glee Club concerts. But there was equal opportunity for learning and evaluating: from President Kemeny's question-and-answer sessions during each of the reunion periods, computer short courses, class - and college-sponsored panel discussions, and Reunion College.
The Class of 1924, with the second biggest turnout of men - 115 - in the history of 50-year reunions, took the 1894 Cup for having the largest percentage, 43, of living graduates back. The Class of 1949 at its 25th won the 1930 Cup for the largest number of men coming back, 136. The Class of 1934, with 121 alumni in attendance, made theirs one of the biggest 40th reunions ever. The '69 reunion attracted 110 alumni, the most men at a 5th reunion since 1963.
