Twenty-Two manifested its traditional Dartmouth loyalty once again in the 1975 Alumni Fund. The Class surpassed its dollar objective of $25,000 by contributing $27,138, or 109 per cent of its goal. Its participation index was 88 per cent. For this proud achievement the Class heartily thanks and congratulates Head Class Agent Spenny Smith and the 20 classmates who worked so earnestly as associate agents to effect this excellent accomplishment. To all classmates who contributed, and to the many other members of the class family who donated in memory of departed classmates, a mere thank you is not enough; your participation sustains the excellence of Dartmouth, and that's what we all cherish.
Bill Bullen, class president and eminent son of Dartmouth, received a unique and meritorious distinction from the College last May in Hanover at the luncheon closing Class Officers Weekend. As an "unprecedented, once and only" appreciation from the College, Dartmouth Secretary Mike McGean presented "The First and Last Annual Awarder's Award" to Bill. Since classmates have probably already seen the complete citation elsewhere, its brief mention here merely reiterates that the award was in well-deserved recognition of Bill's 20 years of service as chairman of the Alumni Council Committee on Alumni Awards and: "... In the direction of a sensitive function requiring great care, caution and tact, ... you have been judicious, prudent and discreet in the exercise of balanced consideration." Twenty-Two takes pride in your honor, Bill, and warm congratulations from the Dartmouth fellowship to you and Trudy.
Mrs. Sumner D. Kilmarx, the former Helen Martin Wood of Scarsdale, N.Y., and widow of Meredith Wood, former president of the Book of the Month Club, receives a most cordial welcome into the Dartmouth family. She and our Killy were married last May. She is a portrait painter, and a Vassar graduate as are some of our best '22 girls such as Mary Daniell and Catherine Miner. If by that note other daisy chainers are unintentionally by-passed, let us hear from you. And may Helen and Killy have many years of happiness together.
Jack Dodd, our Dartmouth Trustee Emeritus, and his good wife Fran were warmly welcomed visitors to Hanover in late spring. Jack attended college meetings and several most pleasant gettogethers highlighted their visit.
Two class families celebrated golden wedding anniversaries recently: Les and Nan Wagner in May and Warren and Mary Daniell in July. Congratulations to the four of them and especially to Nan and Mary for their fortitude.
Would that all the news were equally cheerful. But here are the latest hospital reports.
Spenny Smith had emergency gall bladder surgery in mid-July even before the final 1975 Alumni Fund results were published. He was rushed to the Springfield hospital for a night operation. He was released in late July, and at this time, mid-August, he is convalescing satisfactorily at home. Please, Spenny, don't scare the Class like that again, because to '22 you are indispensible.
Sandy Sanders, Spenny's senior year roommate, joined the "cardiac club" in June when for four days he was in the intensive care unit at a Houston hospital. After his release some two weeks later, he is improving steadily, but his expected visit to Hanover in September will probably have to be postponed. Come back when you can, Sandy.
Stan and Catherine Miner spent some time in Hanover during May when Stan was in the Mary Hitchcock for treatment of phlebitis. He was released after a week or more and, hopefully, by now he has long since regained his former pep.
Still, even more sorrowfully, in recent months the Class has most sadly lost Bill Mann, SonnyRichardson, and Bud Winkler. The obituaries will appear in this issue or the next.
The Class also offers its deepest sympathy to Dick Litchfield whose Mary, his most loyal and beloved wife for 46 years, passed away in June.
And, likewise, similar condolence from the Class to Haskell and Harriet Cohn upon the fatal heart attack in July of their son-in-law, William H. Wolf, a partner in Haskell's law firm.
Finally, to all classmates, please stay healthy and enjoy life. The Class hopes to have you with all of us for many years to come.
