During the current New England mud season perhaps we won't be criticized too severely for listing our Florida news first. From such reliable sources as Dan Drury and Jack Roberts in separate uncollaborated reports we learned that they, George Leyser, Holt MacAloney and GibRobinson all were present at a holiday Dartmouth luncheon in Sarasota. Sally Drury was there to represent the distaff side of the Class. When a Sarasota High School group sang "Dartmouth's in Town Again," joined by 75 alumni, all felt 50 years younger ... for a few minutes.
Henry and Margaret Bixby are in residence at Boca Raton and catching up with friends (Louand Lucille Weber among others) in Palm Beach County Dartmouth. Club and in Delray. Henry is still involved in his Haverhill business and continues as a director of Haverhill National Bank. In summer their home will be at Conomo Point, Essex, Mass.
The Belleview Biltmore, Clearwater, letterhead reads: Donald E. Church, Managing Consultant, so Don is not letting the 70th milestone interfere with the mileage he is getting on a 1904 model - as he terms himself after "his birtriday.
Frank Van Eiszner writes from Dayton, 0., that he is a semi-retired auto man (this dates back to Studebaker days) but still "slaves" two or three days a week for a friend in Columbus who has an auto auction. He and Tex Borden, Bellbrook, 0., retired and does traveling, TomColt, Kettering, 0., just retired as' managing director of Dayton Art Institute and TischHoerner, also Kettering, who continues as a top Ohio surgeon, meet once a year for a three hour luncheon just to be sure all four noses are counted in the 1926 Green Derby Alumni Fund. Al Loner, please note!
And speaking of Al Louer - Sandy McCulloch Jr. '50 chairman of the 1974 Alumni Fund had this to say to him: "For your consistent and dedicated work as Head Class Agent during the 1974 campaign, we are pleased to award you the Chairman's Citation for Outstanding Performance. Without your help, the continuing and increasing success of the Dartmouth Alumni Fund could not have been possible." 1926 has won 11 Green Derbys under Al's able leadership and rejoices in the honor he has so rightly earned. Al and Ellen are wintering once again in Tucson, Ariz.
Being on ambulance call from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. one day last fall gave Hod Stentiford the opportunity to write a note of thanks for the class birthday greeting on his 71st. Hod has been active for 25 years in the Leonia, N.J., volunteer ambulance corps and is currently captain of same. He is also director of the Northern Valley Red Cross and chairman of their motor service. This still leaves time for golf twice a week in his retirement which he took six years ago from Travelers Insurance Co.
Twitch Gould took time off from work around his and Margaret's farm at '"400 West," Antrim, N.H., to acknowledge the salutation from the Class also on his 71st. Al retired from St. Andrews School, West Barrington, R.I. as headmaster two years ago.
Ted Greely also has retired from teaching, but continues on a part time basis at Palm Springs, Calif. High School. He and Laura are hoping for another trip east - perhaps for the 50th, Ted?
With the 50th only 14 months away HapJohnston has volunteered to head up a hobby and memorabilia exhibit, and Russ Clark, reunion chairman, was delighted to have Hap serve again in this capacity. With their Christmas greetings Pat and Hap included a story entitled "The Old Fashioned Christmas Eve" by Marjorie Holmes, author, which, in fact, did what they thought it might, "surely bring back childhood memories and perhaps a lump in the throat and a tear to the eye." The story has a place in any memorabilia show.
A very good letter from Dot Robinson relates his activities since 1926 which have been most interesting, and Hub Harwood, editor says Smoke Signals will give more details. Don and Margaret are enjoying their retirement at Wolfeboro, N.H., on Lake Winnepesaukee for the past nine years, Don having been editor and publisher in New York and New Jersey of a magazine called The American Press, a trade paper for small town newspapers. They are active in many phases of village life and enjoy seeing Bud and Marion Banfield who are frequent visitors in Wolfeboro, being owners of an island in the lake.
Last fall Juil and Evelyn Blicke went on a 38 day trip to South America and Africa and reported in a "Dear Jack" note to treasurer Jack Roberts that it was a great experience. Our fiscal officer, incidentally, is balancing up the class books, but advises that if any one remembers that he forgot to send a check, he will leave the book open just enough to slide it in and be counted.
The Darien (Conn.) News commented editorially on the "unusual and imaginative" in fund raising undertaken by the local Beautification Commission headed by our own Henri P. Esquere. It seems Snipe et al are raising funds to help underwrite the cost of dogwood trees which can then be sold to the public at greatly reduced prices, thus encouraging the improvement of Darien's appearance.
