Recently in cleaning out a cupboard I found an old volume entitled American Ski Annual1940-41. It was amusing to read the ads and see how many once-prominent firms have long since lost their punch — Northland Skis, Sandler Ski Boots, Flexible Flyer Skis, etc. And then I came to one that is still a leader today — "White Stag Ski Togs — Keeping Pace with America's Fastest Growing Sport — the Hirsch-Weis Mfg. Co., of Portland, Oregon" " — a tribute to the foresight and business acumen of Hal Hirsch.

The same volume contained a bibliography of ski publications, listing two books on skiing by Charlie Dudley. And an article I wrote on

"Marginal Skiing," referring to ski trips in the "banana belt" hereabouts. The Class of 1929 marches on!

In a recent note Charlie bragged about Lebanon College: "We have an enrollment of over 500 students this spring semester. It's been a great community effort: over 50 cities and towns send students and there are quite a few courses of real academic quality." It sounds as if Dartmouth may be getting some homegrown competition. Charlie has good reason to brag since he is the new dean of the college.

Bill Morgan reports from Red Bank, N.J.: "We spent a month in England and Scotland in May-June 1974. Great fun and great weather. Haven't decided where we shall head for this year. Still chase a golf ball at least three days a week and will continue until snow stops me. I continue to enjoy retirement - just what the doctor ordered."

And another golfer on the same schedule writes from Walnut Creek, Calif.: "We spent seven months on Maui, Hawaii, in 1974 and are considering making it a year-round base. Went to New Zealand for five weeks in November - our fifth visit since 1962. We play golf three days a week but don't seem to improve greatly - Rich Rimbach."

Erwin Vollmer checks in from Chevy Chase, Md.: "I retired from government service at the end of 1974. Intend to keep working as a consultant (biomedical science), partly for gain and partly for lost causes and hopefully not completely lost causes."

Another Chevy Chase resident is PanosGeorgopulo. He is now president of the Washington Gas Light Club and vice president and director of Gas Light Clubs International, which operates a chain of key clubs in various cities. As such his reputation as a connoisseur of fine food and wine is well established. Last summer he spent six weeks in his home village in Greece visiting his brother Argos '30, who has extensive orange and lemon groves in the vicinity.

Panos can take great pride in his daughter Nina, who is on the Dean's List at Connecticut College, plays in the symphony orchestra, and serves as assistant editor of the college paper.

Harry Baehr writes from Brooklyn: "I'm sorry to be late in answering your letter; my only excuse is that I'm working on the climactic chapter of my book on the Tribune - the one that tells of the death of the old sheet. It was a complex story, and, for me, traumatic. With the succession of crises, domestic and foreign, that I had to cope with for the International Herald-Tribune editorial page, it all kept me busy.

"Jo-ann is deep into photography - one portrait she did of a canon at the Cathedral of St. John here is about the best color portrait I've ever seen - and is having the usual difficulties with developing and printing. (She does both, in color as well as black-and-white.) Last week she had a frustrating time - two batches of film were damaged and two messes of chemicals wrecked by a faulty thermometer!"

Ed Chinlund and Blinker Black are gearing up for the Alumni Fund campaign, and you should be hearing from them soon. They plan to use a total of 75 agents this year for better coverage. Let's all do our part!

The last few days have brought sad news about two of our members. Thomas Stokes died in Concord, N.H., after a stroke and Edwin B.Covey died in New York City while undergoing open heart surgery. Our deepest sympathy goes to their families.
