It is my sad duty to report the death on March 18 of Rowland P. Balph in the nursing home where he had been living for some time. Balph was a C. and G., as were Fred Chase and Robert Falconer. A full report will appear in the obituary section. And a delayed report of the death of Harry Lill on January 1 has reached me from the College. Our 1905 family is putting up a brave fight and as far as I know, we have lost only the two men.

The old-time Dartmouth men in Anna Maria held a very pleasant meeting at the home of Norman Gordon '23 on April 2. Seven were present: two Browns, two Gordons, two Jack Holmans (Cornell '10 and a participant in Dartmouth Alumni College, for 10 years), and LeoSprague '07. The Gordons have a beautiful home and Alice is a charming hostess. They enlivened the conversation, telling of their 27 children and grandchildren. It was a memorable occasion for us all.

We are making a slow but good start for the current Alumni Fund. We have lost many men and widows which puts more work on those of us remaining. I am sure we will all do our best.

One encouraging factor in the discouraging economic world situation is the fact that the churches are building additions. Three churches in Sarasota and our Roser Memorial Church in Anna Maria have big additions which will be completed soon. In our Boston suburban area three churches are making extensive improvements. The Arlington Unitarian Church was destroyed by fire; now plans are well under way to raise $¾ million to rebuild.

I have finished reading the recent tissue of The Bulletin. This was written by Dennis Dinan'61 and Fritz Hier '44 and covers some of our controversial questions. I urge all our men and women to look it over carefully and re-read some items. Both of the writers are young, so they face careers at Dartmouth.

Fred Chase celebrated his 92nd birthday on April 9 with many friends and neighbors. He returned to Massachusetts on April 16 by train.

Our Trustees met the weekend of April 12 and made three decisions: a $743,000 budget cut, approval of a new dormitory, and the extension of freshman eligibility to varsity hockey. A decision on replacement of the ROTC program on campus will be made in June.

We are glad to see articles by Jeffrey Hart '51 receiving so much national coverage.
