Our banker classmate in Hong Kong, "H-J"Shen, has just written that he was unable to get in touch with Bill Harris when the Queen Elizabeth II docked there in March because Bill and many of the passengers had gone to visit Canton, China, and the ship sailed shortly after they returned. He also received a letter from Reliance and Rem Kinne who were arriving ten days later on the SS Rotterdam world cruise, that they were making the trip to Canton and would have only a half a day or less in Hong Kong. "H-J" and I were disappointed that we were unable to arrange a couple mini-reunions. A card from Bob Reid from Baja California, Mexico, said he had just returned to home base in Santa Monica, Calif., from snowmobiling and ice fishing in Canada and immediately took off on a cruise down the Sea of Cortez on a small ship with 24 passengers - great snorkling and fishing.

"Jimmy Fowler, recently retired dean of the faculty of the College of William and Mary, has been appointed to the Williamsburg School Board by the city council to fill a vacancy.

Our sympathy to Brad Parker, whose wife died last September, and to the family of Clarence Hannaford, who died March 2.

Sam Gifford says he and Hordy maintain their zest for life, "keeping busy with the usual occupations such as working every day and being involved in things like tennis and golf for me and tennis, golf, sculpting, piano lessons and community work for Hordy, Since we saw you in Seville some years ago we've been back to Spain (Costa del Sol), the Orient (Bali, Bangkok et al), African safari and lately Mexico and resorts in California and Florida. We're sort of on the lookout for a spot we might enjoy for a more extended period during the winter. Our daughter has given us three grandchildren, my son-in-law (a Harvard man) has joined us in the family business."

Mary and I enjoyed a ten-day vacation in March, returning to Yucatan for the fourth time. We stopped for a day in Galveston to pick up our son Doug and visit his school, the University of Texas Medical School, just as his spring vacation started. We all enjoyed four days at Isla Mujeres, a quiet, beautiful little resort only an hour by boat from the mainland, where the Mexicans are building a tremendous resort at Cancum. The rest of our time was spent with friends in Merida and revisiting the Mayan ruins.

Our trip home took two days instead of the scheduled one, and included spending four hours in a 747 on the ground in the Miami airport while mechanics tried unsuccessfully to fix it before we were sent to a hotel at 10 p.m. The next day we sat on another plane for an hour in Atlanta waiting for the tornado to subside enough so they dared to open the door to let the Atlanta-bound passengers get off.

Dr. Howard Serrell has been appointed director of the emergency medicine department at the Greenwich (Conn.) Hospital. He is the first director of the hospital's emergency services which has been given departmental status. Howie started practicing medicine in Greenwich in 1936 but gave up his private practice in 1971 to become a member of the new emergency service staff at the hospital.
