Magazine closing dates being what they are, this is being written about six weeks before our 40th Reunion actually takes place. Yet, you will read it after you have returned home from that never-to-be-forgotten event. News of Reunion itself must await publication of the AlumniMagazine's September issue. So, if you missed Reunion, be patient! You'll get the whole story later.
Our news this month, therefore, is largely gleaned from the mail bag. Several items concern classmates who were forced to cancel at the last moment. Charlie Sewell writes: "Jean and I signed up as 'certains,' but a myriad of physical problems, including major back surgery for me, will keep us home. The doc says 'no' to any long trips before fall. Alas, we wanted to see all you turkeys badly, and will hoist a few to y'all on June 9th." Speedy recovery, Charlie!
Physical problems also figured in Earl andJane Arthurs' plans. Earl writes "Jane has a delicate respiratory problem and will be unable to attend. I'm coming stag." Earl and Jane recently gave up their home of 23 years to move into a new, and smaller, condominium. "Have no thought of retiring in the foreseeable future. Still involved in life insurance, and am increasingly active as a pension consultant."
A business trip abroad is Joe Sholkin's excuse. But he did get up to Hanover early this spring on a house-hunting trip. (He wound up buying a beach home at Plymouth, Mass. instead). Joe reports "Morry Heller inveigled me into a quick game of tennis, and next day tried to pressure me into some cross country skiing. I was saved by a muddy trail." Joe is expandinh his business interests and recently bought Red Cap Industries, makers of a well-known New England germicide.
The reunion trip was doubly momentous for Joe and Onalene Waters. Daughter Carol (Mt. Holyoke '74) is marrying Paul Glover III '71 son of Paul Glover Jr. '45, in Hanover June 14 The Waters spent a busy winter gadding about In December, they were in Florida hunting fora second home. January found them in Vail and Aspen and Joe reports "While long advocates of Austrian ski terrain, we have now switched permanently to the world's finest - the Colorado 'Alps.' " In March, they got in some spring skiing at Killington and the Dartmouth Skiway and had dinner "at Ted Steele's terrific house near Pico Peak and Killington."
Word from the College reveals that the latest Milbury McCarty Memorial scholar is Laurence F. Ward '76 of Danbury, Conn. He is an honors student in English, with aspirations of becoming either an author or a college professor. The previous student benefiting from this scholarship, funded by Mac's many friends, was Donald S. Fussell, who graduated cumlaude in 1973.
Gordon and Elizabeth Spencer took a trip last fall that must be the envy of all. North to Montreal, across' Canada through the Canadian Rockies to Vancouver, down the Coast to San Francisco and then back to New England via the Grand Canyon, U.S. Rockies, the Great Lakes and Niagara Falls. They stopped off in Pueblo, Colo., to inspect experimental trains, as part of Gordon's work with the research division of the State of Connecticut's Department of Transportation.
One sad note. Frederick Cushing died March 8 in Mobile, Ala., after a brief illness. No further details are available at this time, but an obituary will appear in September.
A fund-raising trip to the West Coast gave George and Ruth Cotton a chance for a family reunion. Dave Smith writes "We had the pleasure of having Ruth and George stay with us. Unfortunately, they were so busy with children and grandchild that we did not see very much of them." Both Colton sons, Richard and Don, live in the Bay Area, and daughter Margaret was visiting so the family get-together was complete.
Dave also had this news about Don Richardson's return to Lockheed several months ago. "Don retired from Lockheed's Missile & Space Company a few years ago, but now is working on a new missile program for nuclear submarines in their Facilities Division. I am sure Lockheed is delighted to have Don, with his real expertise in this field, back in the fold."
QUICKIES: Sid Diamond writes that Saul Deitel was elected president of the Tucson Dartmouth Club. Helen and John Wallace ducked off for a week in England in late April. Change-of-address notices from the College suggest that retirement may be at hand for Charlie Shaw and Bob Ross. Charlie quit the hustle and bustle of Brooklyn for Boca Raton, Florida Bob's new address is Chittenden, Vt.
With this report, I write "finis" to ten years as your class secretary. The satisfactions have been many. Personal contacts with so many of you. The chance to know you better than I ever did on campus. These are rewards that I will always cherish. ,
By the time you read this, we will have elected a new secretary at Reunion. I know that, like many predecessors, he, too, will find it both stimulating and personally rewarding to serve "The Great Class of 1935."
