The summer is about upon us. The Alumni Fund Drive is behind us. Although, as I write this article, it is too early to tell how we fared, I hope all of you gave to the Fund in accordance with what you felt best.
A bit of personal news: I have just accepted the position of president of Communications Counselors Network, which is a subsidiary of the Interpublic Group of Companies, Inc. Inter-public, a holding company with six advertising agencies under its wing, is the largest advertising corporation in the world. Its clients spend over one billion dollars annually in advertising and related marketing expenditures. CCN, as my company is commonly called, is comprised of some 50 people who are located in 11 cities across the country. These people are local marketing consultants who work with clients in planning and implementing local marketing programs, including advertising, promotion, packaging, etc. It is a one-of-a-kind operation which should be most challenging for me. In addition to the new job, I will be in a new home - Atlanta, Ga.! All in all, it should be most exciting as I am anxiously looking forward to getting out of "Fun City!"
I heard from Paul Egner (5807 Spanish Oak Drive, Houston, Texas 77066) who says that he has just been transferred from Los Angeles by Shell Oil, with whom he has worked for the past 13 years. Nothing like being where the oil action is, Paul! Besides making bundles of money with the oil company, Paul's work involves him with projects related to pollution prevention and governmental regulations. I'm sure Paul and his wife Jane along with two boys and a girl (13, 12, and 10 respectively) will love Houston. It really is a great town. Paul, be sure to call Bob Filderman. He'll give you all the local poop! And congratulations to Paul on his recent promotion to lieutenant commander in the Coast Guard Reserve.
Speaking of congratulations, they are also in order for Barry Mahoney (2131 South Clayton Street, Denver, Colo., 80210) who co-authored a book entitled, The Trial of Martin LutherKing. It was mentioned in the March issue of the Alumni Magazine and will be reviewed in a later edition. We should also congratulate Ray Becker (164 Main Street, Westford, Mass., 01886) who was named director of marketing for Raytheon Service Company.
Here's a piece of news from Kenya - Einar Kloster (P. O. Box 30554, Nairobi, Kenya) is the managing director and chairman of the Phillips Group of Companies East Africa. Having beer, in Kenya myself, I know that Einar is having one hell of a time over there.
And, switching from the rock country in Africa to the granite country of New Hampshire, J. Malcolm Swenson (111 Center Street, Concord, N.H.) says that he is acting as an advisor to and the founder of a natural stone industry for a Saudi Arabian Company. In addition, he is chairman of the Governors Committee on the United Nations and the Director of the Council on World Affairs in New Hampshire. Mai, it sounds like you're involved in some very ambitious projects. Our best.
Vince Sawyer (2209 Ridgewood Drive, Lynchburg, Va., 24503) is happily nestled in the comforts of Virginia living, with his wife Judy and his children (Cynthia, Samantha, and Timothy). Vince is an assistant vice president at the Fidelity National Bank as installment loan administration officer, chairman of the employee suggestion committee and the multiple management group. Taking advantage of his financial background, Vince is also the treasurer of the Lynchburg Democratic committee as well as having the same position with Child Care Center, Inc. And, with all that, Vince is looking for the names of other bankers in our Class so that he can swap ideas! Any takers?
Before closing out for the summer (since there will not be another issue until the fall), I would like to tell you about some recent happenings/thoughts from the Hanover Plain. It is most exciting to find out that there is a phenomenal demand across the country to get into Dartmouth. During the period 1971-1974, Dartmouth experienced a 75% increase in completed applications. Two-thirds of that increase were from women. However, even male applications alone were up 28%, only to be exceeded by four other colleges of the 35 top schools surveyed. Another interesting note: although many on campus anticipated fraternity rushing to be down significantly, there were actually 448 "sinks" as a result from rushing (up from 445 last year). It appears as if interest in the fraternity's contribution to college life is starting back up, after a significant fall-off in the late '60's and early "70's.
That's about it for the summer. Hopefully, during this, my first full year as class secretary, you have gotten some enjoyment out of this monthly article. I would appreciate any comments you may have. My one personal disappointment is that more people are not staying in touch with any news. Everybody in the Class is interested in how everyone else is doing. Don't be bashful. Send me a note down in "Tara" country and I'll pass it along. In the meanwhile, have a ball this summer. And get ready for our tailgate parties this coming fall.
