A long newsy letter from Ed Marks informed me, "I decided to take early retirement beginning about Labor Day and will start a job with UNICEF Headquarters in New York about October 1." He plans to take a small flat in that city and will continue to use his Leesburg, Va., address as a permanent one since this is where he plans to spend most weekends. Ed also reports that Joe Carleton is a bit under the weather these days and would like to hear from his classmates at the new address of 1201 Princeton Ave., Bradenton, Fla. 33502. It appears that Ed Marks learned about Joe Carleton's move to Bradenton through JoeRobinson of Orlando, Fla., whose son Peter '57 was a classmate of Joe's son Rick at Dartmouth.
It is nice to hear of the good communication among sons of fellow classmates. In my own case this was not as successful. My son Eric '68 one summer drove almost every day with Ed Marks' son Tom '68 when they were on a project in Mexico sponsored by Aquinas House of Hanover. When Eric told me he had not compared notes with Tom as to where their fathers went to college, I really hit the roof and thought the younger generation lacked a sense of communication.
Ed was one of my oldest friends at Dartmouth as we had gone to high school together. Ed further reports that Ralph Elias, living in San Francisco, is now retired. The good doctor quotes the late Paul Goodman as describing "the confusion of these times ... as the authentic condition of America." Ralph does say, however, that "as for me, I survive in the confusion, beauty, excitement, and freedom that I find here."
Ed Marks had also heard from Herb Fried-man, who was very disappointed not to have been able to attend our 45th reunion, that Dartmouth "continues to have a warm place in my heart." Herb carries on his medical practice in White Plains, N.Y., but he and wife Shirley have bought a house in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla. We hope to see him this winter at our monthly Dartmouth Club luncheons in that 'city.
By this time Carl Ward of Pleasanton, Cal., will have had a chance to visit at Carl's mountain home with Bud Hubbard of San Diego. The two apparently get together frequently. Carl enjoys his cross country trips in the motor caravan that we saw at our 45th reunion, but he is not tempted to come east again for the mini-reunion at the Harvard game. "One trip a year is sufficient for us," he says. "As of now I plan to drive east in 1978, when I will attend a 50-year reunion at Deerfield Academy."
Carl and his wife Phyllis seem to be constantly on the move. He was planning a trip this fall to Bryce Canyon, Zion Canyon, the north rim of the Grand Canyon, and Lake Powell. He was also going in a cabin cruiser on Lake Powell, which he describes as "narrow and about 180 miles long with many side canyons reaching as much as 35 miles from the main body of the lake." Carl has three places where he can be found, "a mobile home where I live most of the time, our mountain home at 5,000 feet elevation in the Sierra, and our motor home which you visited in Hanover at reunion." Carl is a great booster of traveling by mobile camper and says he can stop when he wants to, eat what he wants, and sleep in comfort. Sounds good! Anyone else in the Class doing this?
We understand from a note from Bob Fendrich that Ralph Wheelock suffered a stroke in February from which he is now making a good recovery. We are sure Ralph would like to hear from some of his friends at 75 Comanche Drive, Oceanport, N.J. 07757.
Larry Milgroom, who was at our 45th, has written saying he will be attending the Dartmouth Club luncheon meetings during the winter when he moves to Ft. Lauderdale. We need him and other "young men" to "soup up the geriatric group" as he puts it. Any classmates in the South Florida area please attend - Ist Thursday of every month - Heilman's restaurant in Ft. Lauderdale at noon!
We are looking forward to seeing many classmates in Hanover during our mini-reunion. Please keep the good news coming. Your obedient servant,
Carl McGowan '32, Justice, U.S. Court ofAppeals, honored with doctor of lawsdegree from Northwestern University.
