Forty Dartmouth classes had homecoming get-togethers in Hanover during the Harvard weekend. What with breakfasts, luncheons, parties, and dinners, every class enjoyed itself. And none more so than your class of 1922 with more than 70 members of its clan in town.
Hanover was inundated with visitors. "No Vacancy" signs blazoned for 100 miles around. An overflow crowd of 20,336 saw the 80th Dartmouth-Harvard game. The Big Green definitely won the statistics - a total offense of 306 yards to Harvard's 180, but with one last yard to go we fumbled; recovered on our ten yard line and with one second remaining, we ran the ball to the three-yard line, where Harvard tackled and won 17-10.
A congenial group of '22 ladies began the weekend with a Friday noon luncheon at the Woodstock Inn. Grace Clark, Allie Hoyt, PatGreenwood, Doris Jackson, Betty Mann,Margaret Morrissey, Louise Olsen, Bea Rice, and Jean Robinson admit they even had dessert that day.
By late afternoon those staying at Howard Johnson's had all checked in: Norm and MarianCrane, Max and Grace Kenyon, Steve Kenyon,John and Pat McKoan, Joe and Betty Perkins,Shep and Marion Shepard and Don Tobin. Len and Margaret Morrissey joined them while some went to Hanover to see the rally and bonfire and others enjoyed dinner at the nearby Bum Steer - no kidding, that's the name.
The pre-game luncheon in the Drake Room is the piece de resistance of these '22 football homecomings. This year 58 members of the class attended. Steve Kenyon has probably already listed the complete team, though fortunately not the ages and weights, in a Twoter newsletter.
Saturday evening all those staying at Howard Johnson's, together with Ray and Doris Atwood,Harley and Pat Greenwood, John and JeanKemeny, Ike and Harriott Miller, Len and Margaret Morrissey attended the '22 dinner in a private dining room at the Inn. It was a relaxing, informal occasion and the Class was delighted to have John and Jean with us.
At the dinner it was voted to follow a similar agenda on the weekend of September 16-17, 1977, when Princeton comes to Hanover: rooms at Howard Johnson's, pre-game Drake Room luncheon and post-game dinner at the Hanover Inn. More on that later. But for now, as for so many times in the past, and, we hope, in the future, the Class salutes Ike Miller for making all arrangements for this 1976 weekend and many other happy gatherings of the class.
Welcoming back to Hanover some classmates who are not seen here as often as we'd like is a most pleasant feature of these get-togethers. For instance, it was delightful to have Gray and Dorothy Bates, Grace Clark, Max and Grace Kenyon, Steve Kenyon, Dick Litchfield, Betty Mann, Andy and Charlotte Marshall, Ruf and Sydney Stevens, Shep and Marion Shepard (whom we are very pleased to welcome into '22) with us.
Spenny and Marj Smith, most regrettably, could not be here. On September 23, when they were all prepared to come up to the New Hampshire game, Marj was once again hospitalized for surgery, the third time this year. She is now home convalescing satisfactorily, and both she and Spenny appreciate the many messages of encouragement they have received from classmates.
Since John and Jean Kemeny are members of our class, their daughter, Jennifer '76, naturally belongs to the '22 clan. Consequently, the Class takes special delight in warmly wishing her and her husband, Chas Carner '74, a most happy married life. They had a September wedding in Hanover.
Happy holidays to all, and red-letter '22's 55th reunion dates, June 10-12, 1977.
