As of this writing we are right in the middle of the fall season. After several trips to the north country in recent weeks, I must say that I think this is the most beautiful time of the year. The colors were particularly vibrant and the wood-lands beckoned to be admired and enjoyed.
My "travelling correspondent," Buck Scott (also president of the Class), writes about his weekend in Hanover for the Harvard game. "Sam Roberts and I, with our wives Nancy and Mary, spent the Dartmouth-Harvard weekend at Pierce's in Etna, N.H., a rustic retreat favored by Hanover cognescenti. Using Charleyand Marilyn Breed's house as a tailgate base, we sat in the end zone with a goodly number of '51s and 'enjoyed' the game, which was marked by astonishing fumblitis by Dartmouth. I'll let others comment in detail on the game, but as an amateur, I felt it was just another scrappy Ivy League match with lots of talent running around doing things wrong. Anyhow, during the course of the game and at Charley's very cordial post-game affair, I noted many classmates - Gatzert, Pugh, Michener, Allen, Trolle, Welch, Sweet, Biddle, Sickler, Saxton, Geilich, Price, Ballard, Welch, Rowe, and O'Neill.
"The Breeds thoughtfully invited a group of '51 children - nice guys and gals - who graced the party and made me wish that my own daughter Caroline '78 was there. (She is in Salamanca, Spain at the moment.) But I did get a chance to greet Ted Goldstock, Lori Woods, David Spound, Clare Johnston, Bruce Rowe, and Ken Landau.
"The town was gigantically crowded and the game sold out - and I'm sure there were '51's there whom I didn't see. We decided last summer not to sponsor a formal get-together in the fall because of the recent 25th reunion, but this certainly ranks as a 'mini-reunion'."
Buck also reports that a couple of weeks ago he dropped in to see Jack and Erika Berggren in Rochester. He spent a pleasant two hours with them in their comfortable suburban Rochester home - just getting up-to-date and seeing their kids. Buck hadn't seen Jack for 25 years. Jack was unable to be at reunion because his son was taking the New York State Regents Exams that day and the family felt it was important to be with him.
It has been reported that Hugh Johnston had an operation involving his thyroid. His daughter Claire '80 reports he is now at home and doing fine. We wish you a rapid and complete recovery.
In August Herb Knight was elected president of Newport News Industrial Corporation, a Virginia-based supplier of nuclear power plant components, specializing in industrial products and services. Herb joined Newport News in June 1975, after more than 20 years experience in industrial marketing and metal fabricating. Herb is a member of the board of directors of the Oak Park (Ill.) Trust & Savings Bank, and lives in Newport News with his wife Nancy and their two children.
At the Yale game a few weeks back we found out who were the die-hard football nuts. The game was played in near hurricane rains and gale-force winds. Dartmouth lost the game but we spotted the Hopkins, Weisenfelds, Saunders and Dick Dutton (Jo was the sane one, she stayed home). Visibility was not too good, so if we missed anyone you'll understand.
That empties the larder for this month. It has been suggested to me that I invent stories about classmates when information is thin. We strongly suggest you supply the real thing before we let our imaginations run wild. See you next month.
