Now that Dartmouth is coeducational, I wonder if the guys and gals send valentines to each other. I'm not ordinarily a sentimental person, but I would send a big valentine to Jack and Nancy Skakle. The magnificent Anniversary Yearbook that they produced for our 25th Reunion has been a constant source of reference to me as new class secretary. Jack and Nancy, I love you!
Speaking of valentines, I received a very curious letter from a Sue Smugg who claims to be a classmate! She is currently a research assistant with an anthropological expedition studying ancient goats at the base of the Khyber Pass in Afghanistan. She asserts that the College made an abortive attempt to create a Retroactive Coed Program so that older classes could reap the benefits that undergraduates now enjoy, and goes on to say that she was contacted as a prospect after matriculating at Gaspen College in Wyoming to pursue the liberal arts in her middle years. Before she returns to this country I will try to investigate this strange and rather disquieting piece of news.
Big John Osborn very kindly passed along notes from classmates written on class dues sent to him as our new treasurer (have you paid yours yet?) ... Barney Oldfield wrote, "It's great you are tackling this large job - of course it will be hard to skim as much as Hampton and I did, though you lawyers can think of some devious ways which are not apparent to us nonesquires. Good luck.
Talked to Bob Haffenreffer in Portland (Me.) who said he had just gotten complete clearance on his heart attack recovery. Good news!" ... Dick Kendall advised that the family business, Veribest Systems Co. is becoming a finishing school of business (specialized accounting systems) for family Dartmouth graduates. There is Bill, Class of '68, and Tom, Class of '72. They do have another son in the business in Colorado, but he is a University of Colorado graduate and doesn't count in their roster in the East. Their last child, daughter Mary, is carrying on their Dartmouth connection as a sophomore in Hanover. She is also carrying on the family skiing heritage as a member of the Dartmouth women's ski team. Upon graduating two years from now she will be bringing to an end the family involvement in collegiate skiing that has continued uninterrupted since 1965. With four grandchildren on the scene the field of future Dartmouth "possibilities" is growing and should maintain a family connection that Dick says they would all warmly wish to keep.
Ralph Blackburn wrote in superlatives, "Reunion super! Being exposed to Kemeny was itself worth the trip; but then we had the picnic, class dinner, dance, etc. etc. to renew acquaintances. Anyone who's not attended any reunions would be well advised to start planning to go to our next - now!" Here is a good man for our next Reunion Chairman Steve Hull to contact. In fact Steve scribbled the following note on his class dues, "I will be in Hanover Friday the 17th (of October - see the report of our executive committee meeting in the class notes of the December issue) so we can talk about my ideas for our 35th in 1980."
Speaking of our 30th Reunion, Frank Aldrich mentioned the great time he had there and reports that he is back living in Brazil and finding the panorama more fascinating than ever. He moves about Latin America a great deal and has seen classmates Alvaro Pradilla in Colombia and John Phelps and Jim Drumm in Venezuela in recent times. Son Clinton is in the Bth grade in Escola Graduada de Sao Paulo and daughter Marion is a senior at Berkshire School in Sheffield, Mass. Alexander McAliley wrote, "Am sorry to keep missing our '45 reunions, but between business pressures, travel distance, and expense I just keep procrastinating. Maybe the 40th? - good luck to new officers and committees!"
Lee Kreindler's news is that "I have been elected president of the International Academy of Trial Lawyers" (See the "Give a Rouse for" column in the December issue). "This is one of the most prestigious of the bar groups. Also, I have just completed my second year as chairman of the Committee on Aeronautical and Space Law of the American Bar Association. P.S. My son Jim is a junior at Dartmouth and loves it. I'm afraid he's having a lot more fun than his father did!"
Herb Sandberg has changed positions and is now chief engineer of Harowe Systems, Inc. in West Chester, Pa. They have finally sold-their house in Long Island and have found another one at 1511 Greenlawn Road, Paoli, Pa. 19301 where he says its good to have the family together again.
Finally, Eugene Pinney reports from Rockport, Me. that the summer is over, their last guests have departed and its time to enjoy autumn and some fall cruising on the Bay. Among other things he's handling PR (volunteer basis) for the Camden Outing Club and Camden Snow Bowl. He goes on to say, "If you haven't skied 'where the mountains meet the sea' give it a try. With a new T and double chair we're doubling capacity on the mountain. I'm also heading the Dartmouth interviewing committee in this area. Two children have left the nest. Tom, a Dartmouth '84 possible, still here."
