The 11th Annual Ski Club Reunion at Sun Valley brought together at least seven old Greens including Dick Durrance. And who do you suppose captured the race for men over 60. You guessed it-our man Durrance. Incidentally, we suppose you've noticed that a Durrance is coaching the Dartmouth ski team, and for the curious, that is one of Dick's sons.
We had a long letter from Joe Batchelder recounting some of his recent problems. We quote; "We sold our big house in Peoria and purchased a condominium (address: 4444 Knoxville Ave., Peoria, Ill. 61614). Then we sold our home in Delray Beach, Fla., and bought a lovely home on three acres at Mountain Lake Country Club, Lake Wales, Fla. 33853, where we intend to spend about seven months of the year. All this happened in about 120 days - and during this period I found I was going to need open heart surgery. I delayed the surgery until January 13, when it was performed at the Cleveland Clinic. John Davenport came to visit at the hospital. Four weeks since the operation and I feel super. I walk two miles a day, swim laps in the pool, and live rather normally. I have a check-up in ten days and hope they will let me play golf again. However, while checking me out they ran across an aneurysm in my lower abdomen, so back to Cleveland clinic about April 1. That should do it? Moose and Betsy Wyman came to see us a few weeks ago and we did a lot of Dartmouth talking." (Ed. note) We have also learned that Moose is having a bit of a problem with his locomotion and stamina, but keeps of good cheer. The Wymans are located at 3920 Casey Key Rd., Nokomis, Fla., 33555. On the good news side of things, their daughter Ann had a second child - a daughter - weighing in at nine pounds. Christmas was a family gathering in Vermont for all the Wymans. Moose and Betsy are scheduling April 27 as the date for their trip north to Cape Cod for the warmer months. Moose, we'll look for you as usual this fall over the Harvard weekend.
Last month we reported that Larry and JaneVulte had been hit hard with malaria. This we find came from a retirement "rest" in Haiti. Latest word is that both are recovered, and playing golf in Florida at this writing.
From Chuck Maher comes news of a new address in ill-fated Guatemala City where the Mahers survived the recent earthquake. (12 Calle 10-71 Zone 14, Guatemala City, Guatemala, C.A.) He writes to Cornie Miller. "Your notice arrived despite the recent quake. Our family came through without misfortune and are all involved with some form of reconstruction work. The earth continues to settle keeping everybody pretty jumpy, but the experts say that it might not happen again in 50 years. However a sixth-floor apartment which we are buying in a condomium project goes on the market as soon as things stabilize. I could not get my wife to live any higher than our sunken living room in the forseeable future."
From Dot Conkle we quote from a thoughtful letter directed to Bert relative to the open admission policy being studied by the Trustees of the College: "Last evening I read Walt Darby's newsletter and I noted that you would like comments. Hank agrees with me when I say there is a place in this country for a superlative men's college. Dartmouth is the ideal for that. Frankly I was a bit infuriated when Princeton took in girls-and they are having lots of problems - and then when Dartmouth went-ugh! There are plenty of good colleges for women - so why can't the gals go to them? If they must be near to men - there are lots of good state universities to which they can flock. There is no need for Dartmouth to open its doors any wider. Did the College open admission to females so it could get federal monies? - or did not enough men apply? In other words, if Dartmouth must have women students, please keep the total number small. Let every qualified male in first, then if there is an extra space unfilled, take a woman. The more women, the more problems. While on the subject of admissions, I think Dartmouth should change to taking a percentage of good B-plus and C-plus students who make for college loyalty! Don't count on the whiz-bang brains to do a thing their alma mater. They go mainly for self advancement. So here are two votes for no coeds, or very limited coeds."
And finally, we would be remiss if we did not mention that Bert MacMannis has just been named a vice president of Readers Digest. He is general manager of the TV division.
