By the time you read this column in May, your secretary and wife Polly will have just moved to our new permanent residence at Eastman, only 18 miles from Dartmouth. We decided to build on land we've owned for several years following my retirement from Howard Johnson last year after 40 years in the confectionery business. Our oldest, Ellen, a Colby College graduate, now lives in San Diego and at this writing is about to present us with a grandchild. Son Rick will continue to live in Wellesley working for a very superior fish market here in town. Martha returns in the fall, as a senior, to Wittenberg University after an exciting year studying in Mexico. So much for another mini-biography. Do look us up!
Executive committee member Al Brush and Jean live at 24 Driftway Lane, Darien, Conn. In contrast to some of us, he's still going strong after 40 years with General Motors. Al is executive v.p. of General Motors Acceptance Cor- poration 'in charge of borrowing and finance. Needless to say he is very active in this responsibility, traveling quite a bit. He and Jean have just spent a couple of weeks in Tokyo. Their three sons are all married and they have four grandchildren. Al also serves the Class as bequest chairman along with co-chairman John Wallace.
Washington regional chairman, Frank Specht, has been good enough to send news of Edith and himself and other local classmates. Frank is still working for Schenley Distillers as Washington representative and registered lobbyist. He and Edith recently took a short vacation trip to San Juan and St. Croix.
Al Schnee is with the Dept. of State as Director of the Policy Planning Unit, Office of Congressional Relations. What an interesting assignment! Al's wife Lala pursues a career in painting and is prominent in the Foundry Gallery Daughter Susan lives in Paris where her husband is in the Economic Section of the American Embassy, while daughter Alix devotes her time to conservation and ecology.
Hugh Wolff is still with the Library of Congress in the Foreign Affairs Section. He and Cia passed the Christmas holidays in Italy with son Hughie, spending a year in Paris, and daughter Martha, now in Munich.
Jerry Spingarn is another classmate whom Frank sees occasionally in Washington or at their neighboring beach houses at Bethany Beach. Jerry is administrative assistant to Congressman Henry Reuss of Wisconsin.
The recording secretary of the Dartmouth 35 Club of Guadalajara reports! Howie and Mary Croninger asnd John and Irene Rockwell, the locals, entertained visitors Harry and Anne Ferries at an "organization meeting." Scheduled future events include a golf match, preceded by an in depth discussion of handicaps, and a tentative meeting with John and Lee Howe at the time of our report, wintering in Manzanilla. I'm also indebted to Howie and Mary for welcoming Marthy Muzzy for a weekend!
A note from Jack Davis in Carson City tells of his retirement two years ago from the Nevada Education System. He says he and Dorothy first arrived out there 30 years ago when their car broke down and have remained ever since! They have a son with the U. S. Post Office and married to a lovely girl from New Zealand and one granddaughter. Jack's daughter spent five years in Australia following completing a forestry major at the University of Montana and has now returned for her Masters. They missed the 40th but look forward to our 45th!
Roy Shattuck took early retirement from the School of Business at the University of Pittsburgh in late 1973. He spends much of the winter in Fort Lauderdale and does some traveling in the western U. S. Back home in Pennsylvania he continues a connection with a securities firm and engages in a "modest and selective practice of law."
Duke Mills writes from Winter Park that he rarely sees classmates in south Florida, but he's active in the Dartmouth Club of Central Florida, having served as secretary and working on hosting the Dartmouth Glee Club in March. Fourteen-year-old daughter, Kelley, helped entertain female glee clubbers. Duke is now in his seventh year of managing a large Better Business Dept.
Recent word has been received that Bill Mathers, general counsel of United Brands, has been elected to the board of directors of the American Arbitration Association.
I have just heard of the death of Norman Rand on July 12, 1975. Unfortunately word somehow did not reach us earlier. The obituary section of this issue carries more information.
Among the more than 500 people attending the annual dinner of the Dartmouth Alumni Association of Greater Boston were George and Ruth Colton, Hall Colton, Bert and Margie Jacobs, Doug Ley, Charlie and Phyllis Nayor, John Wallace, and Dick and Polly Muzzy. Charlie bought wine for the table so - a word to the wise, plan to come next year!
Talking of class gatherings, now is the time to make your plans to attend our fall reunion, the weekend of September 25th. George Colton will help you with motel reservations but let him know soon!
And a closing reminder. Head Agent Al Dodd and his 70-or-so class agents are hard at work for the Alumni Fund in our behalf. Have they heard from you?
