This cold winter seems to have shrivelled up the flow of news items. Maybe classmates are too busy hibernating to pass along news of themselves. One exception is James Arthur Field of Orinda, Calif., who is in the jug wine business after having been a vice president of Cunningham & Walsh advertising in San Francisco. He is blending wines that would not stand on their own, to make two labelings: a crisp white and a full-blooded red. Jim does his initial blending by taking samples and mixing small quantities. He and his wife Gina, who also serves as his bookkeeper, go through several tastings, not an unpleasant task! The blends can be 50-50, two-to-one, whatever achieves what he is looking for. His primary interest is in making a quality jug wine and he's been doing that for four years on an ever-expanding basis. Jim was with Cunningham & Walsh almost nine years. Before that he was with McCann Erickson for two years, with BBD&O for six years, and in New York advertising ten years.
Word has been received that Grover W.Penberthy has been named to Board D of the sixth foreign service specialist selection board of the U.S. Information Agency. This includes such specialties as computer systems analyst, equal opportunity program officer, social science analyst, field program librarian, and economic program officer. He is a former political officer at the American Embassy in Monrovia.
A nice letter has come from our class prexy, Frank Hutchins (still in the advertising business). Jeanne, his better half, ran for the Brighton (N.Y.) town council a year ago last fall and won her first election. She's really enjoying politics and getting involved in town im- provements. Their oldest daughter Kathy is in Hanover with her husband, Curt Welling, who graduated from Dartmouth in 1971 and from Vanderbilt University Law School in 1975. He is now at Tuck School and loves it. Kathy has a great job managing the office force for Dennis Meadows, professor in the department of ecology located at the Murdough Center. One of her responsibilities is making arrangements for seminars and conferences on environmental matters attended by experts from all over the world. Number two daughter Ginny is married to Roger Valkenburgh, who graduated from Cornell Law School in 1975 and is now a lawyer with Hart & Hume, a New York City law firm. Ginny received her M.B.A. from Cornell School of Business last year and is now working as a planner at Burke Hospital in White Plains, N.Y. Number three daughter Patty married David Murphy '74, who received his M.B.A. from Stanford Business School and is working in the marketing department of General Mills at their Minneapolis headquarters. Number four daughter Connie is a senior at Ithaca College and is having a great time. She's on the women's crew and really enjoys it. The Hutchins see quite a bit of Spence and Connie Johnson (whose daughter Martha graduated from Dartmouth last June), as well as Griff and Gena Strassen-burgh who are in their bridge club.
I am sorry to have to report the loss of two of our more notable classmates, both in December: Robert O. Beatty, in Boise, Idaho, after a long illness, and David D. Hewitt of Hanover, of a heart attack and car accident. Details will appear in the obituary section in a later edition.
