Hanover in a really old-fashioned winter is gloriously gung-ho about hockey. The splendid Rupert C. Thompson Arena and an eagerly competitive Dartmouth team attract crowds of 4,000 or more to the games.

In this resurgence of Dartmouth hockey, the Class of 1922 has some distinctions. A large inscription at the entrance to the arena reads, in part, "This Arena was made possible by the gifts of many alumni and friends. Principal among them were the gifts of Rupert C. Thompson Jr. 1928 and Carleton Blunt 1926 in memory of his brother John E. Blunt 3rd 1922." Likewise, the officials' room bears a plaque which reads, "Given in honor of Walter E. Sands 1922 by his sons Frank E. Sands II '58 and Robert G. Sands '59."

Assiduous investigation has uncovered yet another '22 gem in Dartmouth hockey. As every hockey buff knows, the goalie is the most important man on the ice. In the 70 years of Dartmouth hockey, many Big Green goalies have guarded the net magnificently. Indeed, in 1,193 games our opponents have scored 4,746 goals against the wearers of the green while Dartmouth has scored 5,353 against the competition. But the Dartmouth net minder with the best record (bet a buck he does not know it himself) is one Donald J. Tobin. The average number of goals against him per game in the 1921-22 season was a remarkable 0.83. The puck escaped him only five times during the season. Yes, there were only six games, and those in Hanover were played in the bitter cold on the old outdoor rink behind the gym. Four games were canceled because of snowstorms. But the Tobin record stands until some super-goalie beats it. Don, of course, was not the only Twoter honorably associated with hockey during our college years. Ray Atwood, Phil Threshie, and Walt Sands terrorized opposing goalies and WillNicholson was manager of the 1921-22 team.

Moreover, Seaver Peters '54, Dartmouth's director of athletics, captain of the 1953-54 hockey team and a zealous promoter of hockey, is the son of our classmate Paul Peters. So, '22 modestly claims its place in Hanover's joyous hockey revival.

Right now, in mid-winter, a goodly group of Twoters has returned postcards to Ike Miller promising attendance in Hanover June 10-12, for our 55th Reunion: Elmer Ardiff, Bob Baldwin, Roy Ball, Gray Bates, John Bray, Regan Brown. Ralph Brucker, Bill Bullen, Grace Clark. Haskell Cohn, Norm Crane, Jack Dana, Warren Daniell, Ted Davidson, Jack Dodd, Carroll Dwight, John Fancher, Tony Hanlon, Chick Hopkins, Gene Hotchkiss, Allie Hoyt, Stan Jackson, Max Kenyon, Killy Kilmarx, John McKoan, Ed McNamara, Rex Malmquist, Andy Marshall, Ike Miller, Stan Miner, Len Morrissey, Herm Oliver, Louise Olsen, Joe Perkins, Markey Pullen, Oscar Rice, Larry Robinson, Walt Sands, Llewellyn Smith, Spenny Smith, Don Tobin, Sterry Waterman. And it is hoped that all who can will bring their fine '22 wives. If you have misplaced the postcard, Ike's address is Gen. Walter I. Miller, R.F.D. Box 236, Thetford Center, Vt. 05075. You certainly won't be among strangers and you will be warmly welcomed, even if you've grown a beard.

Whatever else you want to know, Ike can tell you. But to save you postage, the reunion tax of approximately $50 covers everything except rooms. Fayerweather rooms will be $8 per person per night. You will receive forms in April for reserving these rooms. Hanover Inn rooms, if you can get one of these scarcities, will be approximately $37 plus five per cent tax per night for two people. The Inn already has more reservation requests than it has rooms. But hope springs eternally, and if you must, write to the Inn immediately. Hanover zip code is 03755. Any questions?

It is extremely saddening to report that John Carleton passed away on January 21. More details will be given later in an obituary.

Let's all be together once more, June 10-12. Meanwhile, don't forget Spenny Smith, who cannot sleep nights wondering when you will send in your share - plus 50 per cent over last year — to our 55th Reunion Alumni Fund. "
