From the deep snows in Michigan came this card from Cliff Herold, postmarked February 22: "Mailmen are wearing snow shoes and skis, fender-bending has become a local 'sport.'" But Cliff writes that no snow or cold can hold up on his family get-togethers. He closes with best wishes to the secretary in that "fountain of youth" country.
Jim Shanahan and Clara, who are in Lake Worth, Fla., are the only ones who have mentioned that they like this cool Florida winter. Jim says that he often meets Wes Jones '20, brother of our Charlie Jones.
By now the Marco Polo of the Class, Hiram McLellan, and his wife Laura are back in Texas from their Hawaiian tour. Hiram writes, "It is a beautiful island but is fast getting overrun with tourists."
Via Roger Evans we have this from Les Leavitt: "Our minister son has returned from four years at Mt. Silinda Institute in Rhodesia, and you may be sure we are glad to have him and his wife back, especially as they have just been installed at the Plymouth Church in nearby Framingham."
Dick Parkhurst forwarded the news that he received from the Dartmouth Library - that the Warren F. Upham '16 estate has given to the College a Giannini violin and a Maurice endergast watercolor which the Art Department titled "New England Shore and Harbor Scene."
Fred St. George-Smith in a letter to Ev Parker written in the winter comments, "I do get restless being cooped up in the house, and Audrey [his daughter] says I act like a caged lion." We know about St. George and the dragon, but our "St. George" is taking on a lion. Fred also mentioned that Hurricane Belle gave them a hard time last August.
How about the post-50 reunion next June? Have you made your reservation?
We close once more with an announcement of the passing of a 'l6er - Henry A. Bates. The class sympathy goes to his wife Leila. A memorial notice will appear in a future issue.
