Ione and I escaped from our violent winter on January 29 and spent four weeks in Hawaii and divided two weeks more between California and Arizona. We were not fortunate enough to run into any Dartmouth alumni in Hawaii. However, we had some traveling companions named Glover and Harper from Ottuma and Cedar Rapids, lowa, who knew Frank Fiedler very well. In fact, Mr. Harper was associated with Frank in the hardware business. His remarks about Frank were very complimentary, though he did say that they used to argue a great deal but seldom got anything settled. Another plus for the Harpers is that by way of marriage they have connections with the Russ Carpenters '23 of Oak Park, Ill.

In Pasadena, Cal., we had a good visit with Paul and Bernice Gerrish. Paul is still very active running his tennis and swim clubs and tutoring students in math; and he looks like he might easily be good for another 15 years. He and Bernice indicate that they just might make it back to the 60th. A little encouragement might cinch the deal. I should have tried to contact other '18ers in southern California, but Ione's sister, Peg, whom we were visiting, kept us so busy we had to ration our energy.

On our way home we spent five days in Tucson, where we were guests of my brother Lewis '23 and his wife Ellen. Thereabouts, the Ernest Knutis took us down to Green Valley and Tubac, a delightful Spanish colonial village. In Green Valley, a very attractive development of about 6,000, we looked up Homer and ElizabethBennett and had a real good visit with them and with his brother, Carter '25, and his wife. Homer and Elizabeth retired to Green Valley about three years ago. They are very well-situated with a golf course right behind them. However, I feel they might be enticed back to Hanover for the 60th.

That blurb I wrote on Mt. Monadnock a few issues ago evoked only one reply, or rather, two; but they were from the same individual - Keith Drake '24, brother of our late classmate, Lyman. He informs me that Margaretta is still traveling to distant places, thanks to the marvels of cardiac surgery. Somewhere, I learned that Margaretta is in demand as a judge of figure-skating contests.

To get back to the mountain again. I would like to know how many Monadnock buildings there are in the United States. Can you help me?

We have class officers weekend coming up the first week in May. It should be particularly interesting this year. I am still pushing the post-50-year reunion and am hoping a goodly number of you guys will come alive and accept all the goodies they dish out at this event. And of course bring your better halves with you. Most of us wouldn't be much good without them.

Lastly, do not forget the Holy Cross football weekend. Here we team up with '17 and '19 for a bit of controlled frivolity. George Stoddard will love you if you show up.
