The biggest and best news since our June class notes is the tremendous success of the 1978 Alumni Fund, both overall and by the Class of 1933.. The $5-million goal was oversubscribed by six per cent for an all-time high of $5,317,213, representing a gain of $601,483 over the last campaign, with 61 per cent participation. Likewise, 1933 had an outstanding achievement in oversubscribing our goal of $60,800 by 16.6 per cent for a grand total of $70,914, showing a gain of $4,788 over last year, with 81.6 per cent participation from*346 contributors.

To each of you who participated and to Mannie Sprague, head class agent, and his more than 60 regional and area agents, the Class extends special thanks and congratulations. Not only is this generous support of the College through the Alumni Fund significant in itself, but it provides early momentum for our anticipated giving as one of the reunion classes in 1979 (which Mannie has agreed to handle), and the results will be credited to the five-year Campaign for Dartmouth.

Mannie reports that he and Chilant left Washington, D.C., in August for Wakefield, R. I., where they will be living at 258 Post Road 02879 until about November 1. They will then go to their new winter home in Ojai, Calif. (1312 Rugby Road 93023). They will return to Rhode Island in May each year, and Mannie expects to retain a few legal clients in Washington in association with John Monagan.

By the time you read these notes, many of you will have attended and enjoyed our fall mini-reunion at Quechee Lakes on the weekend of September 22, and the football season will be at the halfway point. More on the mini-reunion next month, and Bob Fox will probably have reported in greater detail in his "Newsletter" during the interim. We look forward to seeing many of you back in Hanover for the foliage and football.

You will also have received early in October a letter from John Rockwell, who is newly elected to chair our reunion (replacing Bill MacCarty), regarding the preliminary plans for our 45th reunion, to be held in Hanover June 11-13, 1979, with the classes of 1934 and 1935. This promises to be a banner occasion that you will not want to miss, and John will have provided an opportunity for you to register your advance intention of attending. Respond favorably and promptly, and watch for additional details regarding the reunion plans that are developing rapidly.

In this connection, Bill Dewey has appointed Jeff Davis to chair the nominating committee; he, in turn, has appointed Jud Pierson and JackManchester as committee members to present a slate of executive committee members and class officers to be voted upon at our 45th reunion. Jeff has indicated that they will be happy to hear from any class members who may have suggestions for the executive committee or officers, who will serve until our 50th reunion in June of 1983.

Jeff also reported that Bill and MarcellaTeahan have established themselves in a singular position by having their son, Harry, entered in the Dartmouth freshman class of 1982 in September 1978. Congratulations!

An executive conference room at the Amos Tuck School of Business Administration was dedicated early in June in honor of Jim McFarland, retired head of the board of General Mills, Inc., in recognition of his leadership contribution to Tuck School as a member of the board of overseers during 1967-1973 (including two years chairing the board, which was made possible by a gift from General Mills).

During the past summer months I received reports that Bob and Babe Fox, Jack Wright,Page Worthington, and Marge Erlandson have had recent surgery and are recuperating favorably.

It is saddening to report the deaths of three classmates. Day Krolik Jr. of Birmingham, Mich., died May 29; Whit (Irving L.) Whitney of Concord, N.H., died June 3; and Bob Carr of Worthington, Mass., died June 13. Obituaries appeared in the September issue.

Once again, my mailing address changes back to Captiva, Fla., as shown above, effective November 1 to about next June 1. Do let me hear from you.
