And I thought Labor Day was traditionally one of rest - a day to sip a few cold ones and to take a last dip in the swimming pool before the autumn leaves clog it up. But instead I find myself embroiled in a "labor" of love as I sort through the summer's news from '77s. I can't tell you how much I appreciate the mail and I'll do my best to squeeze all I can into this'issue. But despair not! What fails to appear in this column will get top billing in the next,

I still have a few holdovers from the spring, including news of Ken Wagner. He is engaged to Marianne, his hometown flame, and any of you who know Ken won't be surprised. It was the inevitable. He still is involved with the Environmental Protection Agency in New Jersey, and sandlot sports encompass his leisure hours.

As expected, June found my mailbox filled with engagement and wedding announcements. Lea Sikora announced her engagement to Dr. Jeffrey M. Hayer '75, a recent graduate of Dartmouth Medical School. As reported in an earlier issue, Lea is employed as a public information officer in Vermont Gov. Richard Snelling's office. The wedding is planned for October 14. Alice Keefe 'BO and Joseph P.Waligore were married June 10 in Rollins Chapel. Jeff McKee and wife, Kathy (Kelly), wrote to tell me of life in California. Their February wedding included several Dartmouth attendants: Peter Bernhard, Rob Bagbey, DarylO'Brien, Nina (Steele) Wellford, DebbieSchwind, and even Jeffs brother, Jim '82. Jeff is working as a sales representative for Xerox Corp., and Kathy is employed by the Environmental Protection Agency in San Francisco. Jeff says that he and Kathy see a lot of Jack Olbrych, Kevin Case, and Scotty Coleman (and their wives), as well as Dave Vaughn,David Wood, and Steve Raggio, all of whom are living in the Bay area.

George Kendrick and Catherine Wieboldt '78 have planned a wedding for September 2. George will be doing graduate work in geology at the University of Montana. Kathryn Glenney and Vincent Paul Laudone were married July 15 in Norwich. In attendance were two '77s, Jonathan Bagger and Doug Morgan. Paul will be continuing studies at Georgetown Medical School.

Ellen Hamilton and Dave Fries '78 were married August 26 in Hartford. Ellen had spent the year working for the Spanish American Center, Inc. in Hartford as an "employment specialist/counselor." It is a small social service agency which serves a portion of the Hispanic population of the city. Ellen and Dave are now in Chicago, where Dave attends Chicago Law School. Mary Lovejoy was part of the wedding party. Mary is working for the First National Bank of Chicago and is also studying at the University of Chicago School of Business. In her letter, Ellen also mentioned that Hannah Page and Mike Koch '76 were married in June and are living in Sachem Village while Mike attends Dartmouth Medical School. The final wedding announcement for this issue (Amen) concerns Linda Bannon. She wrote to tell me that she has been the office manager of Western Videotape Productions in San Francisco for the past year. She became engaged to Tom Hannan '60 who is an antitrust lawyer in San Francisco. The wedding is planned for September 30 in Hanover.

Mike Carter wrote to let me know that he spends his days as a staff analyst at the headquarters of Bell Laboratories in Murray Hill, N.J., and his evenings as a student at Rutgers University, where he is pursuing a master's degree in economics. He mentioned that Armond Enos has completed a year of dental school at Meharry Medical College in Nashville, and Jeff Brooker is working in real estate operations at Equitable Life Assurance Society in N.Y.C.

John Ogden spent his summer as a cost analyst with Schneider Transport Company of Green Bay, Wise. Not all his work was at a desk, though, and he had several occasions to put his ears on and to drive the highways of Wisconsin. He will start his final year at Tuck this fall.

Michael Fortin is for the second year a recipient of a scholarship from the Middlesex County (Conn.) Medical Association. He is entering his second year at the Albany Medical College in Albany, N.Y. Robert C. Duncan has been awarded a James C. Reynolds Scholarship by Dartmouth to study physics at Cambridge University. Amy Semmes has been accepted at Harvard Graduate School of Architecture and will begin her studies in September.

In June a press release from the College caught my imagination. Tish Davis '78 and Ginger Cox embarked June 21 on a 1200-mile row from Seattle to Skagway, Alaska, in a Norwegian faering, a 20-foot, 250-pound boat with a beam of five feet. They were hoping to log about 20 miles per day, rowing mostly through the famed inland waterway. The total elapsed time of the journey was projected to be about 80 days. The craft was rigged with a sail, a safety precaution in case of storms, and a shelter was also rigged from the mast to protect the two women. Provisions were mostly grains, fruits, and nuts, though Tish and Ginger packed fishing and clam-digging equipment. Ginger has been working as a carpenter's assistant during the past year and rowing at least 90 minutes a day. In addition to planning the trip for their own personal satisfactions, Tish and Ginger were rowing to raise money for a Jaycee Camp for juvenile delinquents near Seattle. At this time, I haven't received word as to the success of the trip. It would be a real accomplishment for Ginger, so let me know if you hear anything!

As always the space is too limited and my news too long. So enough for this month and I'll send along the remaining gossip next issue.
