MARCH 1978 ALEXANDER D. VARKAS JR.

Greetings, classmates — this month's column will be a veritable potpourri ranging from the serious to the silliest. First, Richard Freeman, an associate professor of economics at Harvard (college in Cambridge, Mass.) became a full professor. Dick also received the second annual $5000 Graduate's Award for Good Teaching, established by John Kenneth Galbraith, Warburg professor of economics emeritus. (He's the egghead you see on all the talk shows.)

Tom Rand writes the following: "May have set a record for numbers of years to get a law degree. Dropped out of Yale Law in '64 (along with Mike Bailin). Finally graduated last May ('77) from American University and take the bar this February. I run the Washington office of William M. Mercer, an employee-benefits consulting firm. My social life is a wreck — my golf handicap has gone from one to seven. [I know a lot of guys who would give anything for a seven.] I expect to attend our 15th and wish everyone well."

Jim Cornehlsen continues to travel for CBS International Publishing. He has just returned from an International Book Fair in Frankfurt, a meeting in Salzburg, and a wild investigative fling in Nigeria. Wife Betsy completed a professional writing course at the University of Connecticut and is going to remain a part-time student until Josh, three, and Jami, six, are more independent.

Herb McCord has invested in a radio station in San Diego and Judi hopes its the beginning of a new broadcasting empire. (Herb's been broadcasting bad breath since graduation). Talking about breath, Herb, how's your dog Moosebreath?

Tony Thompson writes from Stowe, Vt., ski capital of the East, "No news is good. ..."

Mike Parker sends the following news, "I am halfway through a four-year Navy tour in central Scotland where I am in charge of a two-man dental clinic. We find the climate and culture attractive."

Jim Pfau writes, "We came to Minneapolis two years ago where I took a job with Litton Microwave. I am vice president of private label brands. Jim Lenfesty lives six blocks away."

Bob Bennett will be returning to Hanover in July for a three-year residency at Mary Hitchcock. Wife Joanne and daughters Abbie, five, and Sarah, two, look forward to the move.

Ed Temple writes that (1) he married the former Barbara Anne Baker of Philadelphia in June of '76 and (2) he has left Pennwalt Corp. to join Sun Company as a senior EDP auditor at their headquarters in Radnor, Pa.

John Blakey (Ph.D.) writes that he and Karla have a daughter Meg, born in July of '76.

Jerry Reichwald married Emily Sonner in La Jolla, Calif., in April of '77. This is the third try for Jerry and the second for Emily. We all wish you the best.

Tom Parkinson is now an associate professor of marketing at Penn State.

Ken Sach is finishing up a rheumatology fellowship at the University of Alabama. He is engaged to Suzanne Olds, a law student at Hastings in San Francisco.

Howard Danzig writes that "I have withdrawn as a partner of a large corporate- and commercial-oriented law firm in Newark and Morristown to practice in Short Hills, N.J., specializing in custody cases for fathers. I hope none of you '64s ever need my kind of service."

Al Nadel says that "his family is alive and well in Memphis, Tenn.; a long way from the snow of Hanover. My wife Zoey and son Craig still feel Dartmouth is home. Anyone in this part of the country please visit."

Finally, Pat Terenzini sends the following: "things have been jumping — Twin boys (Drew and John) born June 23, and with sister Eden, this gives us three children under or at two years. It's like a circus around here — but we're managing to keep our sense of humor. We often wondered how the parents of twins managed (Are you listening, Brad and Barbara Evans?), and now we know: like a juggler with an itchy nose. I'm now an associate professor of higher education at Syracuse University, Regards to all!"

That's it for this month.
