The old adage that no news is good news does not help class secretaries much. We hope it is good news which is being withheld, for little comes in except bad news. It is a sad matter to report the death of our loyal friend, HaroldHolt. The obituary appears in this or a later number of THE ALUMNI MAGAZINE, along with that of our interesting non-graduate FredHoughton.
Ralph Sanborn in his own words expresses his delight at being released from the hospital one morning recently after an operation. "For lunch that day I was at home and purring contentedly under the ministrations of my competent and affectionate spouse. Brother! Was it good to be home!" We agree, Ralph, and best wishes from all of us.
In a letter to his class editor, a member of the Class of 1919 writes that somewhere between Cuba and South America he met K. L.Thielscher, who was a passenger on the SSRoyal Viking Star. Barney, why did that news have to come from another class secretary? Let us hear more about this trip.
Helen Brooks is spending some time in Florida until April 19, and before she left Woodstock, she promised to give us the lowdown on some of the many '17ers in that state.
Dot Howe is holding up very well after the long illness and death of Duke. She says she will always be coming to Hanover on any pretext. As she expresses it, "I have been such a part of it all, I just cannot keep away." We are certainly glad of that, Dot.
Even before the Alumni Fund Campaign began, some classmates had already contributed about $5,000. Memorial gifts help a great deal. We hope that this will keep up and give us something to be proud of.
Your secretary has had a grumble against the vast number of autos on the streets of Hanover, on all the available space around college buildings, and on the huge parking lots. This is emphasized by the present consideration of the possibility of allowing freshmen to have cars. Is not the traffic problem in Hanover bad enough as it is? In our undergraduate days, of course, horse-drawn vehicles were much more in evidence. Phil Evans of our class had the privilege of exercising good old Jake's horse if he would take care of and treat it well. Come to think of it, would it be any help to the environmental quality of life to have as many horses tied to posts and railings as there are automobiles today? A fantastic question! Forget it!
