"After 44 years of superior service to all of us, our customers, and our industry, JohnPhillips is officially retiring." That is the opening statement of an article under a picture of John in the latest issue of the employees' magazine of the Vail Ballou Press. John started with Vail-Ballou in New York City in 1934 and has been president since 1958. The issue was dedicated to John and includes three pages of pictures "to relive some of John Phillips' experiences with us at Vail-Ballou!"

He is a former president of the Book Manufacturers' Institute, and his long work in behalf of the industry has earned him the title, "Dean of Book Manufacturing." John was also a member of the famous National Championship football team of 1925, all of whose living '28 members are expected at the 50th Reunion: John, Nyles Lane, Al Fusonie, EddieReece, and Jack McAvoy.

Bud Osborn resigned April 1 as chief executive officer of Economics Laboratory Inc. but will continue to chair the board of the scientific cleaning and sanitation products marketer. Bud joined the family firm in St. Paul in 1928 and succeeded his father as president in 1950. Under Bud's leadership the company built plants around the country and acquired subsidiaries in Australia, Italy, and other countries. In 1954 he moved the head office as well as the advertising and sales offices from St. Paul to New York City. His son, Steele '63, executive vice president, has been named chief operating officer.

Roger Vernon, who has been in the advertising business ever since Dartmouth, is in a nursing home, Waterview, 536 Ridge Road, Cedar Grove, N.J. 07009.

George Emery and his daughter Lisa spent a week at Easter time visiting Costa Rica. We called him as soon as he got home and learned that the flowers and the scenery were beautiful and the people-very friendly. They enjoyed the seven-hour trip on the narrow railroad from San Jose to the Atlantic. George is head of the hobby show at the 50th reunion and is enthusiastic about the 20 or more exhibits scheduled for Room 122 Silsby Hall. Curly andLaura Sadler have graciously agreed to staff the show as they did at our 45th.

Makie and Anne Makepeace like to go south when it is warm so they always take the auto train and go to Naples for the month of April. All their trips back and forth, with the notable exception of May 1976, when they were involved with the derailment, have been satisfactory.

Thanks, Jack Herpel, many thanks! was the headline in the '28 Campaigner in March when Stew Hoagland broke the news that Jack had retired as co-editor of the class newsletter. Jack has been a wonderful and indefatigable servant of 1928, producing "Campaigners" for 34 years. I can't say it as well as Stew - I'm too sentimental to try - but Stew sums up our feelings when he writes of Jack, "His sparkling paragraphs have been a reflection of his lively mind, and his affection for the College helped develop our fine class spirit."

He was a vice president for ten years, assistant class agent for nine years, and has solicited for the Alumni Fund every year. Jack, we are grateful. We all look forward to seeing Jack and Cornie at the 50th.

Budd and Mibs Maring have just returned from a vacation in Nevis and Antigua in the West Indies and will definitely be at the 50th.

Dan and Mary Alice Hatch said, "See you in June!" Dan is busy working for the Audubon Society and land conservation, photographing nature, and carving song birds and water fowl.

We hope George and Fran Pitts will be at the 50th. They are both actively selling real estate, reading, and enjoying being with friends.

See you at the Fantastic 50th!
