For the most part, I seldom have any news of my own activities to include in this monthly missive. I can't resist, though, giving a briefing on our recent trip to Florida. Garth and I spent four days basking in the sun on Lido Beach in Sarasota, where we were entertained by my grandmother. The gulf was beautiful, the seafood was unbeatable, and, as always, the beer was never far out of reach. No trip to Florida is complete without a stop in Disney World, and we loved the Magic Kingdom. I could only handle the "space mountain" once, though! I'm looking forward to a fall which will keep me busy with hospital volunteer work, interviewing for Dartmouth, and singing with a local group.
One of the nicest letters I received this month came from Edy Ullman. She enclosed a picture of a class of '77 oarswomen mini-reunion held at the National Rowing Championships in Detroit in June. Which of these '77s can you spot?: Nancy Parssinen-Vespoli for the New Haven Rowing Club, Edy Ullman for the Lake Merritt Rowing Club, Bets Kent for Vesper, Ginger Cox for the Lake Washington Rowing Club, and Reéne Verdin for the Dartmouth Rowing Club. Check out the "metal" around several of the Big Green necks! The rest of those in the picture are also Dartmouth alumni of various classes.
News from last spring indicates that several classmates have been doing work in Africa with the Peace Corps. David Richardson has been in Morocco, Winston Richie is stationed in Kenya, and Mark Thompson returned from Africa in May. His letter said that "it was a fantastic experience" and that he had run into several Dartmouth students during his travels.
Meanwhile, closer to home, it was announced in the Valley News in May that Ellen Ives has been named assistant director of the Upper Valley Hostel Inc. Prior to being appointed to her new position, Ellen served as an assistant manager of the Last Call restaurant in Hanover. The hostel provides temporary accomodations for outpatients of the Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center, especially 'for those receiving cancer therapy. Families of patients may also be housed at the hostel.
Other spring newspaper clippings brought word that Rob Clapp has joined the Merle B. Grindle Agency as an account executive. It was also noted that Daniel Jones was tapped to teach science at Salem High School in Massachusetts.
John Gallup wrote to say that he has been living in Ft. Lauderdale for about a year. He is working as an account executive for BrowardLife magazine, the city magazine for the Ft. Lauderdale area. He claims that the natives are friendly and that the "surfs up." Sounds great!
I also received mail from Scott Cameron, who claimed he was "inspired" by the class notes. (?) Scott spent his first two years in the wide, wide world studying at Cornell Business School. "Getting an M.8.A., I decided quite early on in my first accounting exam, is a lot like eating spinach. One has a vague feeling that it will eventually prove worthwhile, while seeming somewhat distasteful in the short run," he writes. Scott concentrated in public sector management and, armed with his degree, was able to get himself named a Presidential management intern. He started work with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service as a policy analyst on the personal staff of the associate director responsible for the Habitat Preservation Program. (What?) He elaborated in a later paragraph that he is learning all he can about efforts to restore salmon runs on the Atlantic and Pacific Coasts and is assisting in the development of a procedure to enable the service to identify its resource priorities. (I think I'm still confused!) A recent business trip took him to Oregon, where he saw Allan Muir, who begins law school in Portland this fall.
Notes from here and there include the following this month: Vincent Pellegrini was voted the dean's medal by the faculty of the Dartmouth Medical School. Brian McCloskey, captain of the 1977 Dartmouth hockey team, has been named assistant hockey coach at Princeton University.
This article pretty well brings me up to date. Fresh material would be greatly appreciated!
The National Rowing Championships in Detroit last June drew this sizeable crew ofBig Green strokers and fans, including four '77s (details in the '77 class notes).
