A couple of months ago I mentioned some of our guys who were running for election to some offices. I told you then I'd try to give you the results of the elections.

Well,' I'm happy to say that we now know that Dave Sunderland won election to the Board of Regents of the University of Colorado. Dave, who is president of Gates Land Company, ran on a platform of fiscal responsibility and won with a 56/44 majority. If he manages to bring the costs down at CU, maybe he could tell the Trustees how to bring down costs at DC. Those tuition bills are killing me.

One more note about Dave: He was also elected president of the Colorado Association for Housing and Building last year.

The Class of '52 can now claim the president of the largest corporation in Canada. Last November,"Alan Smith was elected president of General Motors in our northern neighbor country. He had been vice president in charge of head office finance. Alan went to work for GM in the U.S. after he graduated from Tuck and spent three years in the Navy.

As I've said before, when a guy starts making news, he keeps right on doing it. Robert AveryBarton has been elevated to the bench. The governor of Massachusetts has appointed him to the Supreme Judicial Court. The honorable Judge Barton had at one time been assistant district attorney and. a special assistant to the State Attorney General. Those of you who knew him when will want to think twice before calling him "Your Honor Buzz."

Quite a large story from New Hampshire, too. Our erstwhile leader, John Barto, has decided to start a new life. After 23 years with the same law firm in Concord, N.H., John has decided to leave and start his own. This news comes to me from our current leader, BillMontgomery. And (if I can make out his writing), the name of the firm is Barto & Gfroerer. His partner is Dartmouth '67, so we know they have good credentials. If you're ever in trouble in New Hampshire the address is: 6 Lowden Road, Concord, N.H. 03301.

Also from Bill is a clipping from the New York Times which tells me Ken Roman has written another "How To" book. This one is How To Write Better. And now that I've revealed this I wonder how many of you will send me a copy! (I can probably count on Al Jackson.)

To Don Chambless, who lives here in Chicago and works for Bear, Stearns: I hope I helped you with Herb Roth's address.

And for Ted Hecht, who, as I mentioned in a previous article, has set up a new research center to study cancer and genetic diseases in Tempe, Ariz., in connection with Arizona State University, this comment: Ted has started this center as a reaction to the overkill of "Big Science" and "Big Medicine." He is trying to re-associate medical science with the humanities. A noble effort. And while they have a grant from the National Cancer Institute, and some other institutes, these grants don't supply nearly enough to keep the institute going. So if you ever worry about cancer or genetic diseases (there's evidence that they have a common link, you know) and you're looking for a worthy cause for tax deductions, think about Ted and his institute, won't you?

Finally, for this month. My fictions do pay off. I got a very nice letter from Blackwell Smith Jr. Blackie had been wondering where I got the news about his purchase of the old Chattanooga-Atlanta Railway Company. And while I never reveal my sources I will say that I was gratified to learn what Blackie's been doing. He's in the commercial/industrial real estate business, but also spends a lot of time doing civic work - trying to help renovate downtown Chattanooga. Beyond that he's the only '52 I know about who is grandfather to two grandsons. And, most important to my four-year-old daughter, he owns a doll house factory! Let me know where they're sold, will you Blackie?

So here we are in a new year. Full of. apprehension. Full of hope. Full of good will! And I wish we could all see each other in '79.
