Don Beers recently became an associate chief counsel for enforcement at the Food and Drug Administration. Don writes: "The big news is the birth of a daughter to wife Debbie and myself. The baby's name is Laura DuMond Beers. She was born December 3, 1978. She has her moments - she just dropped her pacifier in my tea - but is, on balance, a real joy."
Mike Markaverich continues as "king of the piano" weeknights at the Coonamessett Inn and weekends at Molly's, in Falmouth, Mass. After earning his degree with distinction in music from the College, Mike entered the University of New Hampshire where he obtained a master's degree in music theory and history last June.
Mike was recently the subject of an article in the Sunday Cape Cod Times by Kitty Baker, from which we quote: "Mike Markayerich has never seen his one-room apartment. He is blind. ... Molly Campbell of the restaurant of the same name found Mike playing at a wedding reception in New Hampshire and promised him a job in Falmouth. She kept her word and he came to Falmouth last April.
"The pianos at his two places of employment are instruments he has been 'dreaming about for years. In a very real sense, I've had to learn all over again because these pianos are so responsive.'
"Toy pianos and accordions were his hobby in his early years but now music is his existence and 90 percent of his life. 'Turned on by people,' he says he is rewarded if he brings enjoyment or some small taste of happiness into the lives of others. Sympathy is not his cup of tea. He strives for perfection and expects to be counted on his merits....
" 'The day when I think I've got all my act together, I'd better hang it up.' His list of admirees include Yazstremski, Havlicek, Rice, Orr and some musical greats, particularly Dave McKenna. 'They don't rest on their laurels. That's why they're successful.' "
