The period from May to September is referred to as a vacation for class secretaries, but this does not mean that we lose contact with Hanover. For your secretary this was particularly true this summer, when the Bents were privileged to participate in the Dartmouth Horizons program for three days in July. The purpose of the program is to acquaint groups of people (about 40 in our group) with what Dartmouth really is and what the College is doing. We both came home with a better understanding of present-day Dartmouth, its goals, and how it operates, and we both have the feeling that no one need worry about the future of the College.
We have had interesting correspondence with Bob Wilkinson since the 55th, which, sorry to say, Bob could not attend. Bob spent many years of his medical career in New York City, with three years out for service in World War II in the Pacific. Following several years as chief of surgical service with the Veterans Administration in Tuskegee, Ala., he is now retired and living in Orangeburg, S.C. The Wilkinson family is a true Dartmouth family. His son Bob Jr. 'SO is associate clinical professor of medicine at George Washington University School of Medicine. He is immediate past president of the Dartmouth Club of Washington, D.C., and was honored as the club president of the year. Bob Jr. is also a member of the Alumni Council. Bob's grandson Monty '83 has just completed his first year at Dartmouth, and his granddaughter Amy '78 is director of National Development of the National Urban Coalition. She is entering the University of Pennsylvania School of Law this fall. Bob should be proud of his career and his family. The class should also be proud to have such members as Bob.
Larry Kugelman has been elected an honorary member of the American Pulpwood Association. This election is available only to those who have given outstanding service to the association. Larry was formerly general manager of Woodlands International Paper Company.
An exhibition of paintings and watercolors by James Taylor, Vernon Scott, and Stuart Eldredge has recently been held in South Bend, Ind. In connection with this is an interesting sidelight. Jim and Stu knew each other long before they became classmates and roommates at Dartmouth. In fact they were both born in the same block in South Bend, within a week of each other. Unfortunately, Stu was unable to make the trip to South Bend for the opening. And with further regard to the Eldredge family, Stu's wife Marion has had on display in Springfield, Vt., an exhibit of paintings which follow their family from the cradle to college. Incidentally, the subjects of those paintings, their four daughters, are all artists.
Word has come by way of Norm Everett that in May Ralph Stuart competed in a horse show at the Auburn Farms Equestrian Center in Rowley, where he rides regularly, and came home with two awards in the jumping class. This involved jumping over five fences. Oh, to be so young and active!
The Holmlunds in midsummer were hosts of a luncheon party which included the Wheatleys,Jenkinses, and Bents, at their summer home in Falmouth. The piece de resistance was salmon caught by Harry on his annual trip to Canada. A family reunion was held in August in North Andover, Mass., by the Joe Moyse family, including their three daughters and son William '70 the first family get-together in many years.
Charlie Altman sends word from Sea Island, Ga., which he says is a convenient stop-over for travelers on Route 95 south, but he has seen none from '24. Maybe that could be considered an invitation.
Win Nazro has changed his address in Green Valley. Says he walks daily but no jogging! The Bents enjoyed a visit from the Roly Taylors early in the summer, Roly being accompanied by his bowling balls, as usual.
On the local scene, your secretary spent most of the summer involved in arrangements for the Shrine Circus, which took place in South Yarmouth in August. And one more note from the Cape: the Dartmouth and Cornell Clubs of Cape Cod jointly held a clambake in September. We wish more of you could have been there.
