Fall reunion was a super event. The opponent's being Harvard provided extra attendance undiminished by a pelting rain that only half quit during the exciting game. Some 50 people attended the Friday night X-Club gathering deliciously catered by Peter Christian. Fran Fenn was presented a lovely Hitchcock chair inscribed under his name as follows: "Whose dedication and service to Dartmouth has brought honor and distinction to the Class of 1937."
On Dartmouth Night we managed a goodly number to march behind the 1937 banner in the parade of all classes around the campus to Dartmouth Hall for song, speech, and bonfire.
The Saturday morning class meeting at Hojo's found a large attendance. We learned that we have, besides Fenn, four classmates working on the Campaign for Dartmouth Bill Cash, Ben Doran, Pat Uhlmann, and Paul Olson, and that our class leads all others in pledges, which amount to over six million dollars, thanks mostly to Charley Collis' magnificient five-million gift. A letter from Vice President of the College Ad Winship announced that Charley had earmarked $100,000 of his gift to establish the Gordon P. Bennett Lounge in Davis Field House, $10,000 to refurbish the room, and $90,000 to establish a football scholarship in Gordon's name. Charley and Monk Amon are on the search for a suitable photograph of Benny which can can be blown up to full size for the room. In grateful recognition, Dave Camerer presented Charley with a handsome handmade, crosscut pine, three-legged stool with the Indian logo beautifully hand-painted thereon by his artistic wife June.
Another letter was read by Prexy Ray, this one from Assistant Secretary of the College Tonkevich to the class, emphasizing the gratitude of the College to Rog Allen for being such an outstanding newsletter editor and a first-class example for other classes to emulate. Word came that Don Otis was unable to attend because of a collapsed lung. Later we heard he was quite okay, and with a month's rest, he was all healed up and back to normal. He and Mona had been looking forward to joining us for the first time in years. We also missed Jane Brown, whose house had been thoroughly ransacked the day before she was to come, leaving her in shock and complications.
For any who wish to make a note, our fall reunion for next year is October 23-24, the Cornell game.
The post-game and evening party was held in the Oberlander Lounge in the gym, again catered by Peter Christian.
All were invited for bloody marys and brunch by the joint Bosworth-Erdman host team, same as last year at Erdman's, but this year at the newly built Bosworth home at Eastman. A welcome finale to a wet but fun weekend.
We are so fortunate to have a willing team to put these reunions together - Ben Doran on planning and correspondence, plus the Stearns and Jud Smiths as executors in Hanover. Speaking of those three now-retired pepple, Jud is going great guns in the real estate business in the Hanover area, Russ has been called back to take on again the job of assistant dean of the College due to a sudden vacancy which will extend to next June. Ben and Marge have formed a new company, which will operate from their home in Montclair, called Narod Associates. (Spell it backwards.) The firm will deal in the recovery, manufacture, and marketing of byproduct chemicals of sulphates from soft woods used in paper manufacturing. This was an idea derived from his long activity in the chemical end of the Union Camp paperboard business. The day following their return from the weekend, Ben was headed for China again, this time to introduce two of his ex-associates at Union Camp to the people he had formerly worked with there. This is retirement??
Word has come that AI Reinman suffered two strokes in 1978, which left him with a speech impairment, and he retired from his own business of real estate and appraising - S.R.E.A. and M.A.I. Our best thoughts go out to Al and Yvonne. Their address is 1588 Leyton Drive, Youngstown, Ohio 44509. And from Jake Newton we quote, "Because of further deterioration of my back and stroke problems I had to sell the house in Las Cruces,, as I could no longer take care of it. The friends we had and the activities, including the Dartmouth Club, made us decide to take an apartment in Tucson, at 1345 S. Kolb Road, Apt. 112, Tucson, Ariz. 85710." Also our best to you, Jake.
