This is the mud season in Hanover, which is the terrible period between winter and spring. But this is a strange one, as there was almost no winter. Carnival was made possible due to artificijil snow, but there were a few flakes about. Flakes that I did recognize were Milt and Phyllys Williams and Dick and Shirley Burns. They seemed to be enjoying the festivities right on schedule.
The mail bag advised us that Nelly Craw, a captain in the U.S. Navy, now retired, has hung up the braid for the role of civilian first class. Living in Bethesda, he and Jean are kept busy with two dogs, yard work, gardening, golf, and travel. In the new trustee department, you'll be glad to know that Harry Jacobs recently joined the board of Paul Smith's College in Paul Smiths, N.Y., while Don Meads has been elected a trustee of the Valley Forge Military Academy Foundation, the governing body of the Valley Forge Military Academy and Junior College of Wayne, Pa. In their spare time, these gentlemen have heavy-duty positions in the financial world Harry chairing the board and serving as chief executive officer of the Bache Group and Don chairing and serving as president of Carver Associates.
Bob Whelden had a tough 1979 and is looking forward to a better 1980. In the early part of the year he lost his wife Margaret, and in the latter part of the year he spent five long weeks in the local hospital. Take hope, Bob, 1980 has to be your year.
Ed Chalfant, a professor at Hofstra University, describes life in New York as he and Helen live it, and he makes it sound pretty good. He teaches upperclass courses in Shakespeare and American literature and supplements his insufficient salary by fixing up the places they live and selling them, one after another. We'll advise you when Ed's book on Henry Adams as a young man is published, so you can get in line early.
Charlie Brown, the tycoon of Carlisle, Mass., is still deeply involved in supplying machines to the wire and auto industries. He spends his spare time as managing partner in an 82-acre land subdivision, so there doesn't appear to be too much opportunity to goof off.
I received a great letter from Cliff Roberts, who shared all sorts of hot dope from the Minneapolis-St. Paul area. The Robertses' youngest daughter Suzie is now a freshman at Skidmore, following her two older sisters to that institution. I hope Cliff won't be embarrassed by my sharing his view of Joe Palamountain: "outstanding as an educator, administrator, and businessman." Cliff said about other '42s in Minneapolis-St. Paul: George McClintock is a close neighbor and the senior partner in his law firm as well as having been elected mayor of his village by acclamation for the past 15 years. Youthful Brad Bowman still has children at home, while RogerBaker splits his time between Minneapolis and Ocean Reef, Fla. John Brooks and KellyWehnes represent the stockbroker world, the former with Paine Weber and the latter with E. F. Hutton. Other players are Bill Oppenheimer,Bill Stockdale, Bob Fisher, Bill Kroff, EdSivright, and Carter De Laittre.
Thank you, thank you, Cliff, for your great letter. I'll close while I'm ahead.
