On March 13, Emroy M. (Pete) Vehmeyer became the latest member of our "junior" group to attain the venerable age of 90. Four more members hope to be similarly endowed between April and July.
A letter from Ken Clark brought the sad news of the death of Ruth (Mrs. James M.)Mathes on March 7. Ken wrote, "Ruth was to me one of the outstanding ladies of our class, possessed of a great heart, a marvelous sense of humor, and a never-wavering Christian spirit." Her deep interest in Dartmouth and 1911 was typified by the substantial memorial scholarship fund established in the names of James M. Sr. and James M. Jr. '39, to which she made additions yearly. Our deepest sym- pathy goes to the surviving members of her extensive family, in which she took great pride and comfort.
Another recent letter was received from Mary Dunning Cannon of St. Paul, Minn. We quote from it as follows: "A letter from D.A. Cheney in Orlando to my mother, asking for news, was finally forwarded to me this week. I must tell you with great sadness that our mother Julia H. Dunning, widow of Arthur S. Dunning, died last May. She always took pride in and had a great affection for both Dartmouth and my father's classmates. Her account of some of the reunions she attended especially at the Mountain View House are in a journal she kept for many years; it will remind her four children of our parents and dear old Dartmouth." The letter went on to say that she and her husband "mostly raise Cain and two dogs and two cats" (shades of the late Duke). Her brother Arthur S. Jr. is a professor of English and education at the University of Michigan and has published a number of books. I must say, Don, that your polite requests for news are more productive than my nagging entreaties.
A recent letter from Ken Clark enclosed an advertisement taken from the Wall Street Journal which reads, "John Dodge is creating another world-class Florida community. He gave Florida two of its finest resort communities Quail Ridge and Delray Dunes. Now he is launching a secluded and extraordinary residential community (Pelican Cove). . . . Each residence comes with a private dock. Pre-construction prices range from $250,000 to $310,000." The central figure here is John B. Dodge '53, son of Mary (Silk) Dodge and the late Frank Dodge. Ken stated that he had lunch with Mary at Quail Ridge and can testify to the super quality of that resort. The physical and fiscal limitations of our generation preclude any inclination to a residence at Pelican Cove. But we do recommend the consideration of its feasibility to our more mobile and affluent progeny. To the class of 1911, the name of Dodge will always revive the cherished mem- ories of the many post-reunion gatherings it was privileged to enjoy in the ideal surroundings and atmosphere of Mountain View, with its incomparable North Country hospitality.
